Bio:

Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley (/ˈfreɪli/; born April 27, 1951)is an American musician best known as the former lead guitarist and founding member of the rock band Kiss. He took on the persona of the "Spaceman" or "Space Ace", and played with the group from its inception in 1973 until his departure in 1982. After leaving Kiss, Frehley embarked on a solo career, which was put on hold when he rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a highly successful reunion tour. His second tenure with Kiss lasted until 2002, when he left at the conclusion of what was purported to be the band's Farewell Tour. His latest album Anomaly, was released on September 15, 2009.Guitar World magazine ranked him 14th Greatest Metal Guitarist of All Time.

Album:

Rock Candy Records has reissued the long out of print third solo album by ACE FREHLEY, "Trouble Walkin´", in my opinion, his best.Dubbed the Space Ace, he was the man with the rocket firing guitar, the coolest member of rock gods Kiss and a man who attracted a legion of fan followers of his own, for reasons both good and bad.Ace's devilishly potent guitar playing lent Kiss a sense of purpose and ambition that elevated them from amusing comic book crusaders to seriously dangerous metal heroes.Fired from Kiss in 1981 Frehley pursued a solo career, one that was eagerly anticipated by legions of fans keen to sample his razor sharp riffs and quirky songwriting in a brand new setting. With two successful albums recorded under the banner of Frehley's Comet, Ace retired the band moniker in favour of a solo outing for album #3, the amusingly titled "Trouble Walkin". The recording reunited Frehley with veteran Kiss producer Eddie Kramer helping to craft a record of high grade hard rock with all the accoutrements that you might reasonably expect from such a maverick character. There was a gaggle of musical special guests - among them ex- Kiss bandmember Peter Criss, and Skid Row's Sebastian Bach, Dave 'Snake' Sabo & Rachel Bolan. Also returning to the band was original Frehley's Comet rhythm guitarist Richie Scarlet, while on backing vocals we find AOR top singers such as Al Fritsch (Drive She Said) and Peppy Castro (Balance). An inspired creative cover of Electric Light Orchestra's "Do Ya" was nearly a hit on MTV, while other highlights included the album opening "Shot Full Of Rock", the hard bluesy workout "Remember Me" and the instrumental "Fractured III".There's fun and rocking compositions like "2 Young To Die", "Back To School", "Lost in Limbo" and the title track were we can hear Ace playing some catchy riffs and hot solos. The set also features the Desmond Child / Paul Stanley penned "Hide Your Heart" recorded for Kiss' 1989 album Hot In The Shade. Both "Trouble Walkin´" and Hot In The Shade were released around the same time, creating some dissent between Frehley and his former masked band mates. If you ask me, Ace's version is better.I really like the commercial approach of Ace Frehley previous albums with Frehley's Comet, but on "Trouble Walkin´", Ace sounds and feels 'unleashed' playing the best styles of rock he loves: hard rock and classic American metal with a bluesy foundation.Backed by tight band and a shiny production, Ace unloads salvo upon salvo of lighting fast licks and twisted riffs proving that his talent was as explosive as ever. The Rock Candy remaster gives more air and gain to these rocking songs, a very underrated record that deserves more attention. As said, in my opinion this album is the best work that Ace Frehley ever did.Recommended piece of classic American Hard Rock.

His latest album Anomaly, was released on September 15, 2009.Guitar World magazine ranked him 14th Greatest Metal Guitarist of All Time.

Album:

Frehley's Comet is the second solo release from Ace Frehley, former lead guitarist of Kiss. Frehley also named his band after the title of this album, and in this way, it is also considered the self-titled debut album credited to Frehley's Comet, as opposed to a Frehley solo release. It was the first album that Frehley released after leaving Kiss in 1982.Frehley formed his solo band in 1984. He went on tour to perform his famous Kiss classics and some new material, which was recorded with his new band. The original Frehley's Comet lineup consisted of Ace Frehley (on lead, backup vocals and lead guitar), Richie Scarlet (on lead, backup vocals, lead and rhythm guitar), John Regan (on bass guitar and backup vocals), Arthur Stead (on keyboards), and Anton Fig (on drums). Anton Fig, who played drums on the album, also performed on Frehley's 1978 Kiss solo album, as well as Kiss's Dynasty and Unmasked albums. In 1985, Richie Scarlet left the band to focus on his own solo career. Scarlet's departure led to another lineup change with Arthur Stead being dropped out and Tod Howarth joining the band, handling the rhythm guitar, lead and backup vocals duties. The original Frehley's Comet lineup recorded various demos and songs around 1984 and 1985, and many of them were performed live; however, the songs from that era are still officially unreleased, and only few of them made it to the final recording of Frehley's Comet. Notably, "Breakout", "Into the Night" (which was a cover of Russ Ballard), "We Got Your Rock", "Love Me Right", "Dolls", & "Stranger In a Strange Land" are the only songs on the record which were previously performed live in the band's early career and finally made it to the album.

"Into the Night" was a minor hit single for Frehley, reaching #27 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 1987. The song was originally written and recorded by Russ Ballard (on his 1984 album Russ Ballard), who also composed Frehley's Top 20 single "New York Groove."

"Breakout" was co-written with late Kiss member Eric Carr around the Music From "The Elder" recording era. The song, however, was not used on the record and was later released by KISS on their Revenge album, with the title "Carr Jam 1981." The instrumental part of the song was written by Frehley and Carr; however, the lyrics of the song were probably written by Richie Scarlet, as this was one of his vocal performances on the Ace Frehley shows before he left the band on 1985. The band recorded a demo of the song with Richie Scarlet on lead vocals, and Frehley sharing the lead guitar solo parts with Scarlet. On the Frehley's Comet record lead vocals are handled by Tod Howarth with all the guitar solo parts handled by Frehley. Whenever Frehley performs this song live, he dedicates it to Carr.

"Calling to You" is a re-write of a song called "Mega Force," originally recorded by the band 707 in 1982. Tod Howarth had been a principal member and songwriter with 707 and likely brought the song with him when he joined Frehley's Comet. Originally recorded as the theme to the motion picture Megaforce, the song had been 707's biggest chart achievement (#12 Billboard Rock Tracks). The "Calling To You" version by Frehley's Comet features altered lyrics, with Jonathan Cain's writing credit removed and Frehley's added. Interestingly, the Frehley's Comet album was released on Jon Zazula's apparently unrelated Megaforce Records.

"We Got Your Rock" was originally written in 1983 by Marty Kupersmith of Jay and the Americans (a band with ties to Paul Stanley´s early band Uncle Joe via drummer Neal Teeman) as a follow-up to Joan Jett's "I Love Rock & Roll" and previously recorded in 1985 by ex-Steeler bassist Rik Fox´s band Sin. The Sin demo also had Kiss connections as it was produced by Dana Strum, later with Vinnie Vincent Invasion and Slaughter, and featured future Kiss guitarist Tommy Thayer on backing vocals.

"Breakout", "Something Moved", "Dolls" synthesizer, samples and sequences by Gordon G.G. Gebert.

Album:

Second Sighting is a studio album by American hard rock band Frehley's Comet. This is the second and last album released under the band name Frehley's Comet and the third solo release from Ace overall.Second Sighting was recorded with new drummer Jamie Oldaker, who had previously worked with Bob Seger and Eric Clapton. He replaced Billy Ward who was in the videos and part of the tour for the previous album replacing Anton Fig, who would return for 1989's Trouble Walkin'. This makes Second Sighting the only Frehley solo album or project (excluding compilations) to not feature Fig."Dancin' With Danger" is a cover version of a song recorded by the Canadian band Streetheart which featured future Loverboy members Paul Dean and Matt Frenette. Although the songwriting credits list Frehley and Dana Strum, the music and lyrics are very similar to the original version. Sequencer programming was done by Angel keyboardist and writer Gordon G.G. Gebert."Insane" and "It's Over Now" were released as singles with corresponding music videos. Both singles failed to chart.UK-based company Rock Candy Records reissued this album on CD in 2014.

Bio:

Kiss was formed in New York in '72 by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen) and Gene Simmons (Gene Klein). The line-up was rounded out by drummer Peter Criss (Crisscoula), located through a Rolling Stone ad, and lead guitarist Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), who answered an ad in the Village Voice. The band's cartoon image, kabuki makeup and 4th-of-July stageshow concept was in place from the start, and they began promoting their own hall shows in NYC. TV director Bill Aucoin saw them, became their manager, and secured a deal for them with Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records within two weeks. Three LPs were released in a year's time, but the live fourth LP, Alive! (1975) contained their first huge hit, "Rock And Roll All Nite." Until the early '80, Kiss was unstoppable, with two huge-selling Marvel Comics, a network TV movie and four simultaneously-released solo albums under their studded belts. In '80, Criss left for a solo career and since then, the drum and lead positions have been ever-changing. In '83, the band stripped away the makeup and celebrated renewed interest."You wanted the best, you got it! The hottest band in the land: KISS!" So went the rally cry at the beginning of a Kiss concert, an event of exploding pyrotechnics, vomited blood and louder-than-God hard rock. Their fan club--The Kiss Army--swelled to six-figures strong during the band's '70s heyday, and between 1974 and today they've sold in excess of 70 million albums. In '96, the original band reformed (made up?), and took their full costume-makeup-pyro 1976 show on the road--for a year-long stint--resulting in one of the most successful rock tours ever. Conjecture that the band wanted to quit on a high note has remained unproven; anything could happen in Kiss' future.

Album:

Ace Frehley is a 1978 solo album from Ace Frehley, the lead guitarist of American hard rock band Kiss. It was one of four Kiss solo albums released by Casablanca Records on September 18, 1978. The album was produced by Frehley and Eddie Kramer. It featured Anton Fig on drums. He later performed session work on the Kiss albums Dynasty and Unmasked, and became a member of Ace Frehley's band Frehley's Comet.Fig and Will Lee, who played bass on three of the album's tracks, later gained international prominence as members of the World's Most Dangerous Band and the CBS Orchestra along with Paul Shaffer on Late Night with David Letterman and Late Show with David Letterman. In an interview with Loudwire, Frehley stated that some of the songs from his solo album were originally slated for the fifth Kiss album, Rock and Roll Over. AllMusic rated the album 4 stars out of 5 and said, "Of the four Kiss solo albums, the best of the bunch is Ace Frehley's".Jason Josephes of Pitchfork concurred that it was the standout of the Kiss solo efforts, describing it as "a melange of riff rock, power pop, and just a little bit of soul"."New York Groove", which was first recorded in 1975 by British glam rock band Hello, rose to No. 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. This was the highest chart placement for any of the singles released from the 1978 solo albums. The album reached No. 26 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. It was certified platinum on October 2, 1978, and shipped over 1,000,000 copies. It is the highest selling of the four Kiss solo albums.

Album:

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley will release "Origins Vol. 1", a collection of twelve newly recorded classics from Ace's formative years featuring some of the biggest names in rock and roll, on April 15. Most notably, KISS frontman Paul Stanley joins Ace on FREE's hit "Fire And Water". This collaboration marks the first time that Ace and Paul appear on the same studio recording since KISS's 1998 reunion album "Psycho Circus".Ace spoke with Rolling Stone about the new record, his guest players and recording with Paul after all these years. Regarding his reunion with Stanley, Frehley shrugged off any residual tension between the two of them. "We've always been friends," he told Rolling Stone. "The press seems to amplify negativity. I guess it makes good copy."Frehley also commented on Stanley's appearance on "Fire And Water". "I thought Paul did a fabulous vocal on it," he said. "He jumped at the chance to do this because it's something that’s outside of KISS and his character in KISS, and it gave him a chance to, you know, sing. With Paul, you usually think of him singing in a slightly higher register and on 'Fire And Water', he's singing deep from his diaphragm, and it's a real cool vocal. Everyone who's heard it just thinks it's the shit."Today Rolling Stone debuts "White Room", the classic hit originally performed by CREAM. Other guests are none other than Slash trading leads on THIN LIZZY's classic "Emerald", Lita Ford singing and playing lead on THE TROGGS staple "Wild Thing", ROB ZOMBIE guitarist John 5 playing guitar alongside Ace as he sings his classic KISS composition "Parasite" for the very first time, as well as Jimi Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic", and PEARL JAM's Mike McCready also plays guitar with Ace as he finally sings his KISS "Alive!" mainstay "Cold Gin". "White Room" is also an iTunes instant gratification track, meaning fans who pre order the LP on iTunes will receive the CREAM cover song instantly.Ace will be as active as ever on the road in 2016, having just announced three weeks' worth of tour dates in the U.S., including two nights at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City. Ace will be joined on the road by Richie Scarlet (rhythm, guitar and vocal duties), Chris Wyse (THE CULT) on bass and vocals, Scott Coogan (BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION) on drums. After weeks of bad-mouthing each other in the press, the four original members of KISS were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2014 by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist Tom Morello, with all four — Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss — delivering warm, nostalgic and even sweet-natured speeches that put aside the simmering tensions for at least 12 minutes.KISS did not perform — the Hall Of Fame wanted the original quartet only to play, while Simmons and Stanley insisted on the current lineup — which also includes guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — performing as well. In the end nobody won that battle.

Album:

Former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has always fared better than the band’s other members when it comes to solo efforts and 2009’s “Anomaly” was a big hit with fans- and it’s not hard to see why as it was a real return to form and some of his best post KISS output (well, the second exit anyway). However, the album has been out of print since 2010 and has now been granted a deluxe edition re-release. Remastered and boasting three bonus tracks – two unreleased and the other only previously available on the original vinyl release. If you already own the album then you would probably need to be a completest to add the reissue to you collection as the bonus tracks are not earthmoving- “Pain In The Neck” is a slowed down version of the earlier album track, it has a heavier feel but as such also feels slightly sluggish. “Return of the Space Bear” would have been a great instrumental but has some very strange laughing and vocal outburst that may be a little too reminiscent of Frehley’s past life on the sauce!! The final “new” track is “Hard For Me” and whilst this is classic Ace it is also a bit too close to a couple of songs on the original release.Talking of which, if you haven’t had the pleasure, please let me briefly introduce you to “Anomaly”. From bombastic opener “Foxy & Free” in the album has a solid feel with tracks like “Outer Space” (it’s where he’s from you know!!), instrumental “Fractured Quantum” (the previous three parts to which reside on earlier solo albums) and “Sister”, which is an old Ace song that has now been dusted down and brought up to date, giving the album a familiar Ace glow to it.“Genghis Khan” has echoes of Led Zep to it whilst Frehley really does make his rendition of Sweet’s “Fox On The Run” his very own. “Space Bear” is another instrumental but this one feeling a little repetitive at times. “Change The World” is slower and has a slight spiritual feel to it whilst “A Little Below The Angels” is acoustic and almost biographical. The recommended starting point, in my opinion, has to be “Pain In The Neck” and “Too Many Faces” which are my personal highlights amongst the album’s original twelve tracks.Ace Frehley is a legend amongst KISS fans and guitar players worldwide and his recent output has been very good, however, as great as “Anomaly” is this deluxe reissue is really only going to complete the collection.

His latest album Anomaly, was released on September 15, 2009.Guitar World magazine ranked him 14th Greatest Metal Guitarist of All Time.

Album:

Founding KISS guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame member Ace Frehley has released a new song today, called "Rockin' With The Boys". This is the second song Frehley has released this year from his forthcoming all-new "Spaceman" album, due October 19, 2018 via Entertainment One (eOne)/SPV. Frehley previously released the track "Bronx Boy" in April. "Spaceman", Frehley's eighth solo album, features nine new original tracks including a cover of Eddie Money's "I Wanna Go Back", a ripping power pop makeover of the original."No need to worry, I'll be home soon, 'cause I'm rockin' with the boys", Frehley sings on "Rockin' With The Boys", which tells the tales of life on the road. Ace says he wrote the original version of the song back in KISS's heyday in the 70s. Both "Rockin With The Boys" and "Bronx Boys" are available on all streaming platforms today and are iTunes instant grat tracks for fans who preorder the album. In addition to Ace's distinctive guitar sound on each track, he played bass on all of the songs on "Spaceman"except for two. The listener might recognize the mighty dinosaur growl of a bass tone belonging to Gene Simmons on the album opener, "Without You I'm Nothing", which Gene also co-wrote, and "Your Wish Is My Command". Both songs were recorded at Frehley's home studio in Rancho Santa Fe, California.Ace's reconnection with Simmons and fellow KISS vocalist & guitarist Paul Stanley (who joined Ace on a cover of Free's "Fire And Water" for 2016's covers album "Origins Vol. 1") might be chalked up to the fact that Frehley has been sober for more than a decade (he celebrates 12 years of sobriety in September). Ace's clean living no doubt has a lot to do with his productive streak, which began with the release of his "Anomaly" album in 2009. "Spaceman" (a title suggested by Simmons, himself) serves as the first collection of all new Frehley penned material since 2014's "Space Invader".Widely known as the original 'Space Ace" and founding guitarist for 16 cumulative years (over 2 tenures) of the multi-platinum selling rock band KISS, Frehley is demonstrably the most popular original member. In addition to having the best selling solo album career (vintage or current) among the original foursome, Frehley's self-titled "Ace Frehley", released in 1978, went on to sell over one million copies, producing the only Top 40 single, "New York Groove" from any of the legendary KISS solo albums (peaking at #13)."Spaceman" will be released through Entertainment One (eOne)/SPV with an exclusive European cover artwork on October 19, 2018 as CD digipak and LP version.

Album:

On October 29, Ace Frehley reunited with his former FREHLEY'S COMET bandmates John Regan (bass), Tod Howarth (guitar/lead vocals) and Richie Scarlet (guitar/lead vocals) to perform a couple of songs at the "Kruise Fest" music festival and rock and roll expo at the DoubleTree Hilton Convention Center in Miami, Florida. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below.Frehley, Regan and world-renowned drummer Anton Fig formed FREHLEY'S COMET in 1984. The band went on to sell well over 1.5 million albums and had multiple MTV music videos in heavy rotation from 1987 to 1990.Scarlet was in FREHLEY'S COMET from 1984 to 1985 and played in three of the band's seven different lineups. Howarth was in FREHLEY'S COMET from 1986 to 1988 and was in the group's last three lineups. Both Frehley and Regan were members of FREHLEY'S COMET for the duration of the band's four-year existence.Frehley previously reunited with Regan and Howarth to perform the songs "Rock Soldiers" and "Cold Gin" during the original KISS guitarist's September 2017 concert in Poughkeepsie, New York.Frehley told Ultimate Classic Rock that the keyboards on FREHLEY'S COMET's debut album were a result of "Howarth's influence." He explained: "I tried to keep the keyboards to a minimum, because I'm really not a keyboard guy. KISS never really used them, except on a couple of songs. I always wanted to follow the same direction with my career as I had with KISS musically. It was almost like I had to fight to keep more keyboards off the record, because I was there with three other band members and my producer."In a 2017 interview with the Poughkeepsie Journal, Regan — who met Frehley in the mid-1980s at a friend's recording studio in White Plains, New York — described Ace as "a kook, in a good sense. In a world full of copies, he's a one-off. He's an original."Last year, Regan, Howarth, Scarlet joined forces with former ACE FREHLEY drummer Steve Werner in a new band called RETURN OF THE COMET.

Album:

While you may be saving up for the Christmas rush, you might want to set aside some extra dough to add to your vinyl collection. That’s because in recent years we have seen a wealth of vinyl treasures also surfacing for a second Record Store Day promotion taking place on Black Friday. This 2019, that came on Nov. 29, and the Record Store Day website has just issued a listing of specialty items. For classic rock and metal fans, one of the highlights include this limited edition of ACE FREHLEY’s “Frehley’s Comet Live…”, the previously unreleased version of the alarmingly-good live recording they did at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, in 1988.Some tracks captured at his stupendous show were part of Frehley’s Comet EP ‘Live +1’, but the audio / track list on this 2019 release is the first to replicate the version only appeared on VHS video. The track list order is different to the ‘Live +1’ vinyl, and one song is exclusive to this 2019 RSD.“Rip it Out” (from Frehley’s ’78 KISS solo album) kills, “Breakout” (agonizing drum solo included), “Something Moved” (featuring stupendous lead vocals by talented Tod Howarth) and “Rocket Ride” (one of the five studio songs from KISS’ 1977 Alive II album), the EP rocks pretty hard and has a great live production sound. As extras, we added other songs performed that night, where Ace and the band were particularly inspired. There’s a hot live take on “New York Groove” and KISS classic “Deuce”.

Line Up:

Ace Frehley – lead guitar, lead vocals
Tod Howarth – guitar, lead and backing vocals
John Regan – bass, backing vocals
Jamie Oldaker – drums, percussion ,vocals

02. Something Moved (Live)
03. Cold Gin (Live)
04. Shock Me (Live)
05. Breakout (live)
06. Rocket Ride (Live)

[Same show Hammersmith Odeon ’88]:

Album:

The second covers album from ACE FREHLEY, “Origins, Vol. 2,” kicks off with Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times.” Ace is very much aware of that song being the first song on the first side of the first Zeppelin album, and the first single that the band released in the United States.Mountain’s “Never in My Life” follows utilizing the lyrics from the Japanese album insert with the more appropriate “bolt of lightning” reference. For some this song is less well known than the signature “Mississippi Queen,” but it features a riff that Jimi Hendrix purportedly dug on hearing while Mountain worked in the studio in 1970.Fans of the heavier Frehley penned KISS classic “Strange Ways” should dig the riff too. In addition to connecting with old songs, Frehley has also reconnected with old friends on “Origins, Vol. 2.” The first of these making an appearance is keyboard player Rob Sabino. On “Origins, Vol. 2,” Rob takes on the role of Deep Purple’s late Jon Lord on “Space Truckin’.Long-time fans may be surprised at the inclusion of a Beatles song, the 1965 non-album single B-side, “I’m Down.” Under questioning Ace laughed, “Everyone was telling me, ‘You gotta do a Beatles song, Ace, you didn’t do one on the first record.’ The early Beatles inspired me more than the later records, because they were more raw and more rock and roll. I decided to tackle ‘I’m Down’ and I thought it came out great.Another non-album single follows, originally recorded by the Rolling Stones in 1968, with Ace tackling “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The exquisite Lita Ford returns on vocals for her second “Origins” project with Ace. Guitarist Eric Clapton made a lasting impression on Ace, and now more than half a century later, Frehley makes a lasting impression with the power of his cover of “Politician.”
Ace’s humor is clearly present with the inclusion of the Kink’s “Lola.” Sentimentality is also represented with a smoking cover of Humble Pie’s “30 Days in the Hole,” which features Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander on lead vocal.Over the decades, Ace has interacted with fellow guitarist Bruce Kulick on numerous occasions. The two also share a common love for Jimi Hendrix, and a song like “Manic Depression” was the perfect vehicle for both guitarists to shine, with Ace delivering a perfect vocal for the mood.Like the studio version of KISS’s “Rock and Roll All Nite,” the Paul Revere & The Raiders hit, “Kicks,” didn’t originally include a guitar solo. This limitation didn’t prevent Ace from developing the arrangement and adding a perfect “three-part harmony guitar solo that really Ace-i-fies the song.” The second of the Mann/Weil songs is the Vietnam era anthem, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.” Originally recorded by the Animals.

Line Up:

Ace Frehley (guitars, lead vocals) (EX-KISS)

Album:

Produced by Ace & Trixter’s Steve Brown, and mixed & Mastered by Danger Danger’s Bruno Ravel, “10,000 Volts” is the upcoming new album from legendary KISS guitarist ACE FREHLEY. In terms of production Brown and Ace have managed to deliver a bright big sound, not as compressed and digitized sounding as the hard rock/ metal sounds we are getting accustomed to in the 2000’s.One thing is obvious that each song’s vocal lines and phrasing have been worked on immensely (maybe a bit of auto-tuning but it works). Accompanied by lots of big choruses and three part harmonies, the album is very melodic and catchy. Each song is short and sweet with a punchy choruses. Each stands on its own and is very strong in terms of accessibility and commercial appeal. “10,000 Volts” is one of Frehley best solo albums.Steve Brown certainly adds his incredible sense of song structure on this album. ”10,000 Volts” is a really focussed effort, the most complete in Ace’s solo career.Yeah, the album sounds like Brown’s Tokyo Motor Fist mixed with Ace’s signature guitar playing / voice. And that’s great news! The detail in the arrangements here are great and this is an amazing headphone listen.‘10,000 Volts’ the title track and first single has a big, powerful riff that sucks you in. The chorus sticks. There are some really cool little grooves that sit in this song Scot Coogans drumming is exceptional, aside from the driving nature of this song there are some great subtle things happening in the arrangement great start to the album.‘Walking On the Moon’ the soon to be released second single keeps the momentum going. This song has a swagger to it that has a float to it. You can actually picture yourself strolling on the moon to this. The solo seems to have two parts to it, the first half is super melodic, the second half is signature Ace. This one’s a creeper.‘Cosmic Heart’s huge opening riff has me salivating at what is ahead of me here. The first verse here kind of loses me and then picks me up again for the chorus and return of the riff. The solo is however perfectly placed and executed. If I had to put it within a KISS album this track would sit really well on The Elder. A few listens in it’s heavy, slick and fresh.‘Cherry Medicine’ chorus is hooky as hell and catchy as f@ck. What would we change about it? We honestly can’t stand Ace’s vocal on this he should’ve left that one of his band mates, perhaps only sang the chorus or traded verses. A few listens in and it gets better but the verse vocals feels lazy over such a killer song. It’s the most commercial track on the album, with some Alice Cooper on it.‘Back Into My Arms Again’ has a feeling similar to The Sweet’s classic ‘Fox on The Run’ and when you get to the chorus the melody allows you to sing ‘Fox on The Run’ over it (I challenge you to do it when you hear it). This track has the Steve Brown stamp all over it. Even the solo has this melodic structure that fuses Ace’s style into the tail of it.‘Fighting For Life’ is a winner. Possibly one of our favourite post-KISS Ace songs. Can’t wait to hear it live and I hope it gets added to the new tour set. Heavy modern and gritty, put it this way it blows anything KISS has done since the Revenge album. I would love to hear Ace put an album like this, so good!!!‘Blinded’ verse is awesome, pre chorus is meh but the chorus is a killer. Live this will be killer. When you drop the acapella beginning and kick in with just that riff the song engages you differently. Not knowing the hook in the chorus until the chorus just adds something to it. The solo on this one is hot!!‘Constantly Cute’ musically is fun, so much fun. It’s commendable that Ace is trying something new here but this isn’t an Ace song. A midtempo trippy song, not bad, just different for Ace. No doubt there would have been moment during the writing and production of this album where Ace simply got his way and allowed tracks like ‘Constantly Cute’ to be included.‘Life Of a Stranger’ is a moody mid-tempo track with possibly one of the best choruses on the album. The structure of this song really gives it power and life. One of the stand out tracks. It builds and really tells a story without the cheese. The piano in this song just adds a depth unreached before on this album. The outro solo is pure Ace class.‘Up In the Sky’ and its old school count in is instantly reminiscent of Ace’s 1978 Kiss solo album in vibe and feel, it channels something old while still being something new. The pre chorus just grabs you – that riff is pure magic. This is what Ace does best and would sit perfectly aside ‘Hard Times’ from KISS’ ‘Dynasty’ in a setlist.‘Stratosphere’ is the closing track and an instrumental that follows suit with closing tracks before it unfortunately it takes us 1 minute and 45 seconds to get to what these instrumental tracks are all about; Aces solo. Through the lush nature of this song there are touches of Aces 70s signature sound and licks. One of the stronger and more diverse offerings of an album closing instrumentals. Please give this album a listen when it drops and not just one listen because there is buried treasure is each and every one of these songs. There is something to be found in every listen.Song structure and polished melodic production as we have said before is the big win for ”10,000 Volts”. The band behind Ace is simply amazing. I hope these guys including Brown are in his touring band. One of the best Ace Frehley solo albums, and certainly his best produced.
