Bio:

William Michael Albert Broad (born 30 November 1955), known professionally by his stage name Billy Idol, is an English rock musician, songwriter and actor. Born in Stanmore, Middlesex, Idol first achieved fame in the punk rock era as a member of the band Generation X. Unlike other British punk rock artists of his era, Idol was inspired by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.Idol then embarked on a successful solo career, and was a member of the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the United States.A series of music videos for songs such as "Dancing With Myself", "White Wedding", "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face" made him one of the first MTV stars. Idol continues to tour with guitarist Steve Stevens.Idol was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, England. The name Billy Idol was inspired by a school teacher's description of Broad as "idle".In an interview on 21 November 1983, Idol said the name "was a bit of a goof, but also part of the old English school of rock. Billy Fury and all that. It was a 'double thing' not just a poke at the superstar-like people ... It was fun, you know?" In another interview for BBC Breakfast on 27 October 2014 he said that he wanted to be "Billy Idle" but thought he could not because of the Monty Python star Eric Idle and so chose Idol instead. In 1958, when Idol was two years old, his parents moved to Patchogue, on Long Island, New York, United States. The family returned to the UK four years later with Idol and a younger child Jane (who had been born in the United States), settling in Dorking, Surrey. In 1971 the family moved to Bromley, Southeast London, where Idol attended Ravensbourne School for Boys. Idol also attended Worthing High School for Boys in West Sussex. In October 1975, Idol went to Sussex University, to pursue an English degree and lived on campus (East Slope) but left after year one (1976). He then went on to join the Bromley Contingent of Sex Pistols fans, a loose gang that travelled into town when the band played.Idol first joined Chelsea in 1977 as a guitarist. However, he and Chelsea bandmate Tony James soon left that group and co-founded Generation X, with Idol switching from guitarist to lead singer. Generation X were one of the first punk bands to appear on the BBC Television music programme Top of the Pops.Although a punk rock band, they were inspired by mid-1960s British pop, in sharp contrast to their more militant peers, with Idol stating; "We were saying the opposite to the Clash and the Pistols. They were singing 'No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones', but we were honest about what we liked. The truth was, we were all building our music on the Beatles and the Stones".Generation X signed with Chrysalis Records and released three albums and performed in the 1980 film, D.O.A., before disbanding.Early solo success...Idol moved to New York City in 1981 and became a solo artist, working with ex-Kiss manager Bill Aucoin. Idol's punk-ish image worked well with the glam rock style of his new partner on guitar, Steve Stevens. Together they worked with bassist Phil Feit and drummer Gregg Gerson. Idol's solo career began with the Chrysalis Records EP titled Don't Stop in 1981, which included the Generation X song "Dancing with Myself", originally recorded for their last album Kiss Me Deadly, and a cover of Tommy James & the Shondells' song "Mony Mony". Idol's debut solo album, Billy Idol, was released in July 1982.Part of the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the United States, that year Idol became an MTV staple with "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself".In 1983, in an effort to introduce Idol to American audiences not yet as familiar with him as those in the UK, Idol's label released "Dancing with Myself" in the United States in conjunction with a music video directed by Tobe Hooper, which played on MTV for six months. On 16 February 2010, Idol was announced as one of the acts to play the Download Festival in Donington Park, England. He stated, "With all of these great heavyweight and cool bands playing Download this year, I'm going to have to come armed with my punk rock attitude, Steve Stevens, and all of my classic songs plus a couple of way out covers. Should be fun!"[28] In March 2010, Idol added Camp Freddy guitarist Billy Morrison[29] and drummer Jeremy Colson to his touring line-up.In 2012, Idol appeared on the third episode of the BBC Four series, How the Brits Rocked America.Idol released his 8th studio album Kings & Queens of the Underground in October 2014. Whilst recording the album between 2010 and 2014, he worked with producer Trevor Horn, Horn's former Buggles and Yes bandmate Geoff Downes and Greg Kurstin, who has previously produced records for Beyoncé, Pink, Sia and Lily Allen. Idol will go on tour in November 2014 through April 2015 to support the album.

Vital Idol: Revitalized is a remixes compilation album by English rock vocalist Billy Idol released 28 September 2018.More than 30 years after his groundbreaking Vital Idol compilation cemented the vibrancy of the dance-rock remix genre in the second half of the 1980s, Billy Idol’s Vital Idol: Revitalized collection features 11 brand-new remixes of Billy’s most classic and enduring hits. Lending their hands to the Revitalized proceedings are electronic dance luminaries Moby, The Crystal Method and Paul Oakenfold as well as current innovators including RAC, Tropkillaz, Shiba San, Juan Maclean and CRAY.Vital Idol, initially released in Britain in 1985 and subsequently issued in the United States in 1987, was the first remix record released by a rock superstar. Besides being certified platinum, Vital Idol was accompanied by a version of “Mony Mony” that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, as well as hitting the Top 10 on the U.K. Singles chart.Highlights found within the grooves of Revitalized include The Crystal Method’s percussive, explosive stab at “Rebel Yell,” CRAY’s bass-and-keyboard-blessed “White Wedding,” Tropkillaz’s trop-house framing of “Eyes Without A Face,” St. Francis Hotel’s shimmering stop/start caress of “Flesh For Fantasy,” and RAC’s retro-harmonic, fist-pumping “Dancing With Myself.”The digital version of Revitalized features four additional exclusive remixes, namely the brand new Billy Idol/Steve Stevens Remix of “Mony Mony,” Paul Oakenfold’s Extended Remix of “One Breath Away,” Moby’s “Half Time Version” of his take on “(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows” and “Save Me Now” (Lost Dog Remix), reworked by Billy Idol’s son, Willem Wolfe Broad and Eddie B. The album has been described as a "modern-day upgrade" of Vital Idol.Vital Idol is a 1985 compilation by English rock vocalist Billy Idol.It contains remixed songs from his first two albums and the Don't Stop EP. The album was reissued in the US with extra tracks in 1987, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard 200. The US release was supported by a live single version of "Mony Mony".The original release, sporting a photo from the "Dancing with Myself" video was originally released as a mini-LP in Europe in 1985. The US release was expanded to feature the "Mother Of Mercy Mix" of "To Be a Lover" and reissued in 1987 with different cover art, featuring a photo still from the live video for "Mony Mony" on CD. The 1987 issue was 24 bit digitally remastered and released globally in 2002.

Album:

Eighties icon BILLY IDOL is set to release ”The Roadside” — his first new release in nearly seven years — on September 17 via Dark Horse Records.Produced by Butch Walker and featuring Idol’s longtime lead guitarist and co-writer Steve Stevens, ”The Roadside” was conceived, recorded, and mixed almost entirely under the shadow of the pandemic. The new studio material is much closer to Idol’s classic ’80s works than the material of his last album (2014), which we like a lot. The lead single “Bitter Taste” features some of Idol’s most introspective and confessional lyrics ever, as he confronts death, rebirth, and his personal growth in the thirty-one years since his near-fatal 1990 motorcycle accident.“Certainly, the motorcycle accident was the catharsis, the wake-up moment. A little bit of me got left on that roadside. But it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing in the end; it was a wake-up call. Maybe on that roadside I left behind the irreverent youthful Billy and opened the door for a more attentive person and a more sensitive musician.”“Bitter Taste” starts off with the strumming of an acoustic guitar. The lyrics portray a man who has lived hard and is unapologetic about doing so.“You should have left me way back, by the roadside.” As usual, I love Steve Stevens’ spectral electric guitar that is ever present but never overwhelms the track. It floats in the background until the very end then bursts forward like tears held back too long. When Stevens intertwines the acoustic guitar with the electric, it’s money. Shading the light with the dark, it’s the perfect balance. Stevens is one of those guitar greats who never gets the credit he deserves. He and Idol are a fabulous combination. Here’s also some tracks captured live during the 2014-15 ‘Kings & Queens of the Underground Tour’, all greatly performed and perfectly recorded / produced.

Line-Up:

Eighties icon BILLY IDOL is back with new 2022 material in the form of ”The Cage EP’‘ which is set for release on September 23 via Dark Horse Records. The new music follows the release of Idol’s 2021 ‘The Roadside EP’, which included the Top 15 hit ‘Bitter Taste’ and received praise from fans and critics alike. As usual, Idol is joined on the new project by his longtime collaborator, co-writer and guitarist Steve Stevens, one of the greatest hard rock axeman of his generation.Idol rocks like hell here. Just listen to the title track where he is “screaming in isolation”, ready to break out after “living on the edge” and “fighting with my demons”, while Stevens and the other players steer the song from its tense verses into an explosive bridge and chorus. You could drop this on any of Idol’s multiplatinum efforts of the ’80s, or even on a Rick Springfield album and it would sound as valid then as it does now.Billy Idol is eligible for Medicare ads and is a grandfather, but he still has some burrs under his saddle and ghosts in the machine to deal with in his golden years. The artist formerly known as William Broad makes all that clear on ”The Cage EP”, a four-song record that follows last year’s The Roadside and now appears to be Idol’s preferred form of releasing new music. The truncated format certainly works to his advantage, as well as the listener’s, as this bite-size 14-minute dose of Idol blazes by in a blink and leaves us wanting more, more, more. The sneer, angst and “hopeless rage” of Idol’s iconic ’80s hits are evident throughout ”The Cage”, with Stevens still alongside and firing off meaty riffs as if he has them stockpiled and just waiting their turn to be taken into the studio. And while the raging Idol persona may seem ripe for caricature, on ”The Cage” – released in tandem with the George Harrison-established Dark Horse Records label (now run by his son Dhani) – he presents himself as subtly matured, wiser but not necessarily tamed after 45 years of releasing music. After the incendiary title track, Idol digs even deeper on “Running From the Ghost,” staring out by singing alone with a piano before the track again ratchets up, this time into the kind of galloping, goth-y metallic opus that Ghost would be proud to have on their albums. Stevens aptly channels a sizzling twin-guitar attack, while Idol’s examination of “the Jekyll to my Hyde” clues us into some dark internal struggles that feed his muse. The Cage’s other two songs are character studies. “Rebel Like You” is a glammy, guitar-drenched rocker in which Idol eyeballs a fan in the crowd “in your leather boots and black waistcoat, looking just like me” – and loving it.The closing “Miss Nobody” is the change-up, meanwhile, produced by hitmaker Butch Walker and co-written by fellow pop hitmaker Sam Hollander; its sonic polish and slinky rhythm slink are decidedly contemporary, but the women in the story – down and out but not defeated, and still defiant – is not a far cry from where Idol has positioned himself on the EP.There are likely some Idol fans frustrated by the EP format and craving something full-length. But the short-form approach is keeping Idol ‘vital’ and in as fine fettle as he’s ever been, so let’s not rock this cradle any time soon.
