Bio:

Streetheart is a Canadian rock band, from Winnipeg, Manitoba that got its start in Regina, Saskatchewan. Their best known songs include "Action", "Hollywood", "Teenage Rage", "One More Time", "Tin Soldier" (Small Faces Cover), "Here Comes the Night" (Van Morrison Cover), "What Kind of Love is This", and their cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb".Keyboard player Daryl Gutheil and bassist Spider (Ken Sinnaeve) formed a band called Witness Incorporated in Regina, and then relocated to Winnipeg, where singer Kenny Shields joined the band.[1] After renaming the band Witness, the group finally became Streetheart when guitarist Paul Dean and drummer Matt Frenette joined in 1977. The band released Meanwhile Back in Paris the following year and Under Heaven over Hell in 1979, after which Frenette dropped out to join Dean in Loverboy. John Hannah played guitars on Under Heaven Over Hell (1979), Quicksand Shoes (1980), and Drugstore Dancer (1980). In 1980, Streetheart won the Juno Award for "Most Promising Group of the Year".Arguably, Streetheart's most popular single was a 1979 disco-hybrid cover version of "Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones (an early Streetheart influence). Streetheart's version achieved gold single status in Canada. The extended live version is notable for its blazing bass solo, performed by Spider Sinnaeve. For the next four years they released a string of albums: Quicksand Shoes (1980),Drugstore Dancer (1980), Action: Best of Streetheart (1981), the self-titled Streetheart (1982), Dancing with Danger (1983), and the double live album Live After Dark (1983). Record sales earned them six gold albums and four platinum albums in Canada. The band broke up in 1983, after which a collection of unreleased songs called Buried Treasures was issued in 1984.Frehley's Comet recorded their own version of "Dancing with Danger" for their 1988 album, Second Sighting. In 1991, Hardline recorded their own version of the Streetheart song "Hot Cherie" for their 1992 album, Double Eclipse. At the peak of their career, Streetheart toured with several rock bands. Canadian bands included Chilliwack, Rush, Toronto, Harlequin, Max Webster, Aldo Nova, April Wine, Headpins; American bands included Sammy Hagar, Styx, Kansas, Blue Öyster Cult. They also toured with AC/DC.Streetheart received a Juno Award, two Ampex Golden Reel awards, a Chimo Award from Music Express Magazine, and were voted the most popular Canadian act at the Peoples' Choice Awards. In 2003, Streetheart was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame.In 2008, the band released a 2 CD retrospective collection titled ...Read All About It - The Hits/Anthology. The band continues to tour and often plays shows in its native Winnipeg.

Album:

Whilst they're probably one of the lesser known Canadian bands of the '70s and '80s, Winnipeg-based STREETHEART had a string of gold & platinum records in their homeland, charting with all six of their studio albums, a double live offering and a posthumous collection of outtakes, as well as numerous hit singles. However, as far as most non-Canadians are concerned their claims to fame will be that founding guitarist Paul Dean and drummer Matt Frenette went on to form Loverboy and a later line-up originally wrote and recorded Hardline's signature tune 'Hot Cherie' back in 1982,strangely opting not to include it on the album it was recorded for.Originally issued in 1980, "Drugstore Dancer" was Streetheart’s fourth album and the first with the AORish sound that would made Canadian bands famous during the decade. So as Streetheart’s records were so hard to track down on CD for many years, Rock Candy Records did a wonderful remaster treatment to this very good LP.Featuring the Mk III line-up of guitarist John Hannah and drummer Herb Ego alongside mainstays Kenny Shields (vocals), Daryl Gutheil (keyboards) and Ken 'Spider' Sinnaeve (bass), "Drugstore Dancer" was a very upbeat rock album in reply to the more laid-back previous LP.As a result songs like 'Go To Hell', 'Trouble', 'You're Gonna Crash' and the title-track are some of the most direct, catchy melodic rockers the band ever recorded, built around gritty guitar parts, inventive keyboard fills, interesting rhythms and Shields' trademark vocal tone.In Canada Shields was a big star with a classy style, which fitted perfectly with Streetheart's quirky direction on this album – if you can imagine Loverboy and The Babys jamming some Cheap Trick tunes then you wouldn't be that far off. There's more catchy tunes like 'Teenage Rage', 'Sold Out' and their version of 'Tin Soldier' are positively infectious, each given extra dimensions by the amazing bass playing of 'Spider' Sinnaeve, a legend of the Canadian scene and the 'go to' guy used on many albums by artists like Helix and Lee Aaron.Sinnaeve would later go on to join Red Rider and The Guess Who, and has been member of Loverboy since 2001 still in the band nowadays.Rockier and more focussed than their previous outing, with "Drugstore Dancer" Streetheart's switch from WEA to the Capitol label certainly paid dividends propelling the record to platinum status and securing their place in the Canadian rock and roll hall of fame. This is the first time that "Drugstore Dancer" has been officially released on CD remastered from the original tapes. The Rock Candy 24-bit treatment is really warm, capturing the original vinyl-LP sound updated to modern equipment.

Album:

The other title from Canadian melodic rockers STREETHEART remastered by Rock Candy Records is their more mainstream LP "Dancing With Danger", regarded by many as one of the best rocking albums produced by a Canuck band during the first half of the '80s.Revered as a Canadian musical institution, this five man melodic rock band carved out a reputation second to none during the early '80s maple leaf music scene. Brandishing a sound that fused gritty hard rock with lashings of melody, they crafted instantly memorable songs and were fronted by one of Canada’s most lauded and capable vocalists in Kenny Shields.Despite notching up a string of gold and platinum selling albums in Canada they were virtually unheard outside their homeland... something that needed to be seriously addressed."Dancing With Danger" was Streetheart’s final studio album, recorded with renowned American producer Spencer Proffer (Quiet Riot, Kick Axe, WASP) in Los Angeles, done around the same time he was working with his commercial breakthrough with Quiet Riot.It was a record that was supposed to focus on breaking into the lucrative US market by employing a smoother sound, tighter arrangements and more accessible melodies. The band had already been forced to replace guitarist John Hannah with Jeff Neill due to illness and now it was felt that drummer Herb Ego wasn't a big enough hitter for the bombastic style they were heading in, with the band picking up Denny Carmassi's brother Billy at the end of his touring stint in Aldo Nova's band as his replacement. With Proffer's powerful approach there's no doubt that "Dancing With Danger" is Streetheart's best produced and most mainstream album. Proffer's treatment of drums and bass giving the title track, the pacy jumpin' AOR of 'You're Not The Only One' and the exuberant 'Too Hot To Stop' an almighty kick, and his sense of space benefiting Gutheil's quirky synth work, while Jeff Neill played his ass off with sizzling guitars riffs and solos. Then we have the ultra melodic 'Comin' True' (where they sound as Autograph) and the early '80s sounding 'Midnight Love', very melodic and FM-radio ready.A very balanced album, "Dancing With Danger" has moments of extreme subtlety in the ballad 'Don't Let Her Leave You' and the hypnotic closer 'Have It Your Way', but in parts rocks harder than they ever did.Originally released by Boardwalk Records, a label formed by former Casablanca Records owner Neil Bogart and home to Joan Jett and Night Ranger amongst others, the album sadly underachieved not because of its quality but primarily due to the untimely death of Bogart and the subsequent winding down of the label. In Canada the album fared well, achieving Gold status, housing a number of well played radio-singles including the title track which was later covered by former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley on his ‘Second Sighting’ album. For more than twenty-five years, Streetheart's "Dancing With Danger" was one of the more sought after melodic hard rock records from the '80s.This is the first official release on CD remastered from the original tapes by Rock Candy with great results. Dave Reynolds' sleeve essay on the 16-page booklet are an interesting read about the history of the album, and Jon Astley did a great job behind the desk.Except the two albums recently remastered by Rock Candy (and a compilation) none of the other Streetheart records have been officially released on CD (all available are bootlegs). There's plenty of scope for additional re-issues by this criminally overlooked band."Dancing With Danger" is a great slice of Canadian & American Melodic Hard Rock / AOR with a typically '80s polished sound.

Album:

Streetheart was one of the seminal bands of the Canadian Melodic Rock / AOR movement. Formed by keyboard player Daryl Gutheil and bassist Spider (Ken Sinnaeve), the band gained considerable success at the beginning of the Eighties in North America with their albums achieving platinum status.Streetheart's career was a 5-year rush, sharing stages with Styx, Kansas, Aldo Nova, Chilliwack, April Wine, Rush and more.Since the beginning, the motto was to wrote commercial catchy tunes with abundance of keyboards, sizzling guitars and the appealing raspy vocals of Kenny Shields. For starters, Streetheart's style is similar to Loverboy, not strange as guitarist Paul Dean was part of the band in the earlier days, composing and recording on the 1st disc, and later went solo to create Loverboy.Several Streetheart singles became an instant FM radio hits, and later many major acts recorded some of the band's penned songs, such as Frehley's Comet and Neal Schon's Hardline making "Hot Cherie" a success. The group is also recognized for their ability to re-arrange and versioning with class other artist's tunes, like their unique interpretations of Van Morrison's "Here Comes the Night" and the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb."Streetheart's catalog wasn't properly re-issued for years. Fortunately Rock Candy recently did a couple a very good remasters, but many of the songs here on Best Of are available for the first time ever in Europe."Best Of" encompass pretty well Streetheart's entire career. A treat for the fans, and if you are new to Streetheart I'm sure you'll enjoy this representative compendium of their fine '80s Melodic Rock music.
