Info:

Rainbow (also known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow or Blackmore's Rainbow) were a British rock band controlled by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore from 1975 to 1984 and 1994 to 1997. They were originally established with American rock band Elf's members, but Blackmore fired all the members except Ronnie James Dio who would leave in 1979.Three British musicians joined in 1979, singer Graham Bonnet, keyboardist Don Airey, former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, and this line-up gave the band their commercial breakthrough with the single "Since You Been Gone". Over the years Rainbow went through many line-up changes with no two studio albums featuring the same line-up. Other lead singers Joe Lynn Turner and Doogie White would follow, and the project consisted of numerous backing musicians. The band started out combining mystical lyric themes with neo-classical metal, but went in a more streamlined commercial style following Dio's departure from the group.Rainbow were ranked No. 90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band has sold over 28 million albums worldwide and 4 million albums in the United States.

Album:

Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe two CD edition of this Rock classic. Released in 1976 and produced by Deep Purple's engineer and producer, Martin Birch, Rising was a much stronger album to its predecessor, containing the Rainbow classic, 'Stargazer' and further solidly performed tracks such as, 'A Light In The Black' and the unusually short n' catchy. 'Do You Close Your Eyes'. With stunning artwork by Marvel comics fantasy artist, Ken Kelly, Rising went on to achieve formidable chart success reaching #48 in the U.S. and an impressive #6 in the U.K. This was the album that saw Rainbow equaling anything that Blackmore's previous band, Deep Purple had ever produced. This edition of the album, adds a mouth watering raft of bonus tracks with Disc One containing both the New York and Los Angeles mixes of the entire album, whilst Disc Two contains previously unreleased rough mixes of all the album tracks along with three tour rehearsal versions.Rising (also known as Rainbow Rising) is the second studio album by the British hard rock band Rainbow, released in 1976. In issue 4 of Kerrang! magazine (cover-dated October 1981), Rising was voted the greatest heavy metal album of all time. Album:

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (sometimes stylised Ritchie Blackmore's R-A-I-N-B-O-W) is the first studio album by British rock band Rainbow, released in 1975. During studio sessions in Tampa Bay, Florida on 12 December 1974, Blackmore originally planned to record the solo single "Black Sheep of the Family"- a cover of a track by the band Quatermass from 1970 - and the newly composed "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves", which was to be the B-side.[citation needed] Other musicians involved included singer/lyricist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Gary Driscoll of blues rock band Elf, and cellist Hugh McDowell of ELO. Satisfied with the two tracks, Blackmore decided to extend the sessions to a full album. The other members of Elf, keyboardist Micky Lee Soule and bassist Craig Gruber, were used for the recording of the album in Musicland Studios in Munich, West Germany during February and March, 1975. Though it was originally planned to be a solo album, the record was billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and later progressed as a new band project. Blackmore and Dio did promotional work for the album. Shortly after the album was released, all Elf members (except Dio) were sacked and Blackmore recruited new musicians for subsequent Rainbow albums. This first line-up never performed live, and the live photos used in the album art are of Blackmore while with Deep Purple and of Elf playing live. The last track of the album, "Still I'm Sad", is an instrumental cover of a song by The Yardbirds from their 1965 album Having a Rave Up with The Yardbirds. The original vinyl release had a gate fold sleeve, although later budget reissues on Polydor reduced to a single sleeve. The album's songs have been performed by subsequent Rainbow line-ups.The album was widely praised for its fantasy/heroic-like lyrical content and the innovative rock style.Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was re-issued on CD in remastered form in the US in April 1999. The European release followed later in the year.Vocalist Ronnie James Dio considered this release his favourite Rainbow album.Despite the title implying the record being a Ritchie Blackmore solo release, in later years Blackmore has jokingly stated that Dio's contributions warranted a re-titling of "Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio's Rainbow".All music written by Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio except where noted.

Digitally remastered CD edition of this Rock classic. Straight Between the Eyes is the sixth studio album by the British hard rock band Rainbow, released in 1982. A remastered CD reissue, with packaging duplicating the original vinyl release, was released in May 1999.The band line-up was the same as had recorded the previous year's Difficult to Cure album, with the exception of David Rosenthal, who replaced Don Airey on keyboards. The title allegedly came from a phrase from Jeff Beck, describing Jimi Hendrix to Blackmore. The sleeve-art is by British artist Jeff Cummins and Hipgnosis. The original vinyl issue had the lyrics printed on the inner sleeve. In an April 1982 interview with British rock magazine Kerrang!, Blackmore stated of "MISS Mistreated", "Well it's to avoid confusion that the 'Miss' is written three times bigger than the 'mistreated' but I expect we'll have someone who shall remain nameless coming up to us saying 'I wrote that song'!"That someone being David Coverdale, with whom Blackmore had co-written "Mistreated" for the 1974 Deep Purple album Burn. Blackmore had this issue with Coverdale previously when a rendition of "Mistreated" was included on the Rainbow live album On Stage.Videos were shot for the songs "Stone Cold" and "Death Alley Driver", which featured Sega's video game Turbo. They were occasionally still aired on VH1's Metal Mania program, but have not been aired since 2005, they can be found on YouTube or on the band's "Final Cut" 1985 home video. All tracks are written by Ritchie Blackmore, Joe Lynn Turner, and Roger Glover except where indicated.

Album:

Digitally remastered CD edition of this Rock classic.Bent Out of Shape is the seventh studio album released by the British hard rock band Rainbow. It was originally released in August 1983 as an LP and cassette. The cassette featured several longer edits compared to the vinyl version. It was recorded at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen in about 7 weeks.Bent Out of Shape would be Rainbow's final studio album before their twelve-year hiatus from the studio. It also proved to be the band's final studio album with vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, bassist Roger Glover and keyboardist David Rosenthal, and their only one to feature drummer Chuck Burgi, who replaced Bobby Rondinelli just prior to the album's recording sessions. The song "Street of Dreams" has been re-recorded in two versions by Blackmore's Night in 2006 for their fifth studio album, The Village Lanterne. The version featured on a regular album was sung by Candice Night. The other version, a bonus track on a special edition of the album, was performed in a duet by Night and Turner. In 1984, "Anybody There" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.A remastered CD reissue was released in May 1999, which restored the artwork of the original release. This has two tracks of a longer duration than on the first US CD issue. This album is generally referred to by critics and fans as a commercial effort, with the band attempting to repeat the success of the song "Stone Cold" and the album Straight Between the Eyes. As a result, some of the songs, like the first single released from this album, "Street of Dreams", are usually considered to be more in the adult-oriented rock style, instead of the hard rock sound of earlier Rainbow albums. The album was particularly aimed at the US market: the title is an American idiom rather than a British one. However, the album received positive reviews in the U.K. Howard Johnson of Kerrang! magazine (No.51 – Sept 22-Oct 5, 1983) praised the album as "possibly Rainbow's most complete work to date" and called "Desperate Heart" and "Street of Dreams" "two of this year's finest tunes".All tracks are written by Ritchie Blackmore and Joe Lynn Turner, except where indicated. The music video for "Can't Let You Go", directed by Dominic Orlando, was filmed in New York City (1984) and inspired by the 1920 silent b/w film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Along with "Street of Dreams", directed by Storm Thorgerson, it became a part of Rainbow's home video collection The Final Cut (1985). The music video for "Street of Dreams" was banned by MTV for its supposedly controversial hypnotic clip.

Other lead singers Joe Lynn Turner and Doogie White would follow, and the project consisted of numerous backing musicians. The band's early work primarily featured mystical lyrics with a neoclassical metal style, but went in a more streamlined, commercial direction following Dio's departure from the group.Rainbow were ranked No. 90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band has sold over 28 million albums worldwide.By 1973, Blackmore had steered Deep Purple through a significant personnel change, with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover being replaced by David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. However, the new members were keen to add new musical styles and Blackmore found his request to record the Steve Hammond-penned "Black Sheep of the Family" with "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" turned down by the band.He decided to record the song with Dio instead, using Dio's band Elf as additional musicians. He enjoyed the results, and a full album, billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was recorded between February and March 1975 at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany.he band name was inspired by the Rainbow Bar and Grill in Hollywood.Rainbow's music was partly inspired by classical music since Blackmore started playing cello to help him construct interesting chord progressions, and Dio wrote lyrics about medieval themes. Dio possessed a versatile vocal range capable of singing both hard rock and lighter ballads, and, according to Blackmore, "I felt shivers down my spine."Although Dio never played a musical instrument on any Rainbow album, he is credited with writing and arranging the music with Blackmore, in addition to writing all the lyrics himself.Blackmore and Dio also found a common ground in their sense of humour.Following the positive experience of recording with Dio, Blackmore decided to leave Deep Purple, playing his last show in Paris in April. The album had a positive critical reception and was a top 20 UK and top 30 US hit. Blackmore's departure from Deep Purple was publicly announced on 21 June.

Bio:

Rainbow (also known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow or Blackmore's Rainbow) were an English rock band, controlled by former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore from 1975 to 1984 and 1994 to 1997. It was originally established with former Elf members, though over the years Rainbow went through many lineup changes with no two studio albums featuring the same line-up. In addition to lead singers Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner and Doogie White, the project consisted of numerous backing musicians. The band started out combining mystical lyric themes with neo-classical metal, but went in a more streamlined commercial style following Dio's departure from the group.Rainbow was ranked #90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.Early years: In 1974, Ritchie Blackmore became infuriated at the funk/soul (or as Blackmore called it, "shoeshine music") elements being introduced to Deep Purple by David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, as well as with the rejection from his bandmates of his suggestion to record a cover for inclusion on Stormbringer. Blackmore had originally intended to record Steve Hammond's "Black Sheep of the Family", a song recorded by the band Quatermass, as a solo single to express that his ideas were being suppressed in Deep Purple. During recent US tours, Deep Purple's support band had been Elf, and Ritchie had been impressed by Elf's singer, Ronnie James Dio. Blackmore and Dio found they had such a creative rapport that a full album's worth of music was soon composed, and they recorded it with Elf as a session band. Emboldened by the experience, Blackmore decided to leave Deep Purple and form his own band around Elf, effectively taking it over minus their guitarist and renaming it Rainbow. The name of the band was inspired by the Rainbow Bar and Grill in Hollywood that catered to rock stars, groupies and rock enthusiasts.

Album:

For the past couple of decades, legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has been focusing on his folk-oriented project Blackmore’s Night. But last year, he put together a lineup of RAINBOW to perform two shows in Germany and one in England. The German shows were released last year as the concert DVD Memories In Rock — Live in Germany. Now, tomorrow June 9, a double CD of the British show is being unveiled; "Live In Birmingham 2016".This was the most requested show by fans to be released, because not only includes all the Rainbow / Deep Purple classics everyone wants to hear, but as well it was regarded as the best performance of the tour. The setlist for the concert at Genting Arena in Birmingham includes classics from Rainbow such as “Man on the Silver Mountain,” “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll” along with iconic Deep Purple tracks like “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water.”The double CD set has performances of “Burn” and “Soldier of Fortune” from Deep Purple’s Mark III era that were not in the German shows. In addition to Blackmore, the Rainbow lineup included vocalist Ronnie Romero, bassist Bob Nouveau, drummer David Keith (Blackmore’s Night), keyboardist Jens Johanssen (Stratovarius) and backing vocalists Candice Night (Blackmore’s Night) and Lady Lynn.Things started off in familiar fashion with the sound of Judy Garland's voice coming through the P.A.: "We must be over the rainbow, rainbow, rainbow," before this 2017 Rainbow show opens with... a Deep Purple song, the classic 'Highway Star'. It's an odd choice to be sure, but Romero's voice stands out immediately.Throughout the set, the elastic singer comfortably handles the unenviable task of recreating the voices, and registers, of Ian Gillan, Dio, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner and Graham Bonnet: nailing it. If nerves were an issue in front of a crowd this size, it didn't show. Then there's Blackmore. Inspiration can come from unexpected sources, and Blackmore has historically been content to lay back and listen for that opportunity. When it happens, it's the reason that everyone is there.Never a "safe" guitarist, Blackmore always searches for that new source of inspiration—even in a song that he's played hundreds of times before. This particular evening was no exception. Four months after finger surgery on his fretting hand, the fully recovered Blackmore displayed a deliberate and melodic phrasing to his guitar solos."Mistreated", originally a Purple song, perhaps got more mileage from the version from Rainbow's 1977 double live album "On Stage". In fact, most of the Dio-era Rainbow material presented here seems to use "On Stage" versions as a template. But "Mistreated" has a deliberate 1974 "Burn-era' feel, with Blackmore finding that sweet zone, and Romero rendering a Coverdale "California Jam" flashback, with crowd assist."Difficult to Cure", the awesome instrumental title track from Rainbow's 1981 is delivered greatly by this line-up. It supplied the intended old-school nostalgia, including a shredding keyboard solo from Jens Johansson.A must for Rainbow / Deep Purple fans, "Live In Birmingham 2016" results also quite recommended to all classic hard rock fans.If you liked last year's release from the Germany shows, then you need this "Live In Birmingham 2016" as it's much better in terms of performances and setlist chosen.

Album:

Expanded reissue of 'Stranger In Us All' by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. The extensive liner notes also feature a personal account from singer Doogie White, plus plenty of artwork and memorabilia from Doogie's own Rainbow collection.Stranger in Us All is the eighth studio album by the reformed British hard rock band Rainbow, released in 1995. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore put together a new version of Rainbow with little-known musicians in 1994. It was originally intended to be his solo album, but due to the label BMG pressures, the record was billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.[1] This line-up only released the one album before Blackmore decided to pursue different musical styles and formed Blackmore's Night with his companion Candice Night. As such, this album marked his final rock and roll recordings for two decades, before putting together a new Rainbow in 2016.The album takes its name from a line in the song "Black Masquerade".Released in the post-grunge mid '90s, Stranger in Us All achieved a modest success, particularly in Europe.Much of the album was featured in the live concert sets. Drummer John O'Reilly was replaced for the tour by the returning Chuck Burgi. John Miceli joined the band for the US shows, from February to May 1997, plus one in Denmark. A live performance recorded at Philipshalle Düsseldorf for German TV 'Rockpalast' on October 9, 1995 was released on the DVD Black Masquerade in 2013.A few songs off the album were played live by the band Over the Rainbow in 2008 and 2009, as the line-up featured Greg Smith and Paul Morris, who played in Rainbow in 1995.The songs have been also performed occasionally by Doogie White, for example in 2004 with a band called White Noise, and 2010 presentations with Rata Blanca. An official DVD recording of White Noise titled In the Hall of the Mountain King was released in 2004. The song "Ariel" was performed live by Blackmore's Night on their 2007 Paris Moon tour.

In 2017 Ritchie Blackmore returned with RAINBOW and his harder rock hat on to a series of arena shows in the UK. An album titled 'Memories In Rock' was released, now comes part 2 "Memories In Rock II" in a handsome CD/DVD package. As fans are no doubt aware, "Memories in Rock II" follows 2016's Memories in Rock, which collected performances from Blackmore's highly touted "return to rock" for a handful of shows with a rejiggered Rainbow lineup that year. The set-list, combining classic tracks from both Deep Purple and Rainbow, was exactly what the fans have requested most and will be found in this double CD package. It also includes a brand new Rainbow song, 'Waiting For A Sign'. This is the first new Rainbow single released since 1996, featuring Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and Ronnie Romero on vocals.Among the highlights, we do get re-arranged versions of the hits ‘I Surrender’ and ‘All Night Long’ which were omitted from the early setlists. The Jon Lord-tribute ‘Carry On Jon’ and ‘Temple Of the King’ are also added. As you might expect there’s a fair amount of noodling – ‘Mistreated’ for example breaks down half way through with Blackmore’s reflective touches.Ditto ‘Difficult To Cure’, a showcase for Johansson keyboards, and ‘Black Night’ drummer David Keith’s spotlight. With more gigs lined up for 2018 perhaps Ritchie will dig deeper into the back catalogue. This "Memories In Rock II", as the previous one, showcases Ritchie's rock side again, and I love it.The Rainbow legacy lives on.

Album:

Digitally remastered Double CD retrospective of the legendary rock band. With Ritchie Blackmore being the only constant in their career I guess most people would associate different eras with the singer who sang the songs, with disc one covering the Dio years (‘Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow’, ‘Rising’, On Stage’ and Long Live Rock’n’Roll’) and disc two covering the Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner eras (‘Down To Earth’, ‘Difficult To Cure’, ‘Straight Between The Eyes’, ‘Bent Out Of Shape’ and ‘Final Vinyl’).Personally I found the debut album very patchy with only ‘Man On The Silver Mountain’ really standing the test of time, but you can’t really argue with ‘Tarot Woman’, ‘Stargazer’ and ‘A Light In The Black’ from ‘Rising’ – a true masterclass in dynamics and virtuosity with everyone, particularly keyboard player Tony Carey and drummer Cozy Powell, stepping up to the plate. As much as I like it, the lengthy live version of ‘Catch The Rainbow’ rather breaks the flow (unlike the awesome ‘Kill The King’) and I’m a bit non-plussed by the absence of ‘Long Live Rock’n’Roll’ rather than either ‘Lady Of The Lake’ or ‘L.A. Connection’ from the album of the same name, alongside the essential ‘Gates Of Babylon’.I’m afraid I find the second disc significantly less interesting, although at least you get something previously unreleased in a live version of the old chestnut ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ alongside single b-sides ‘Weiss Heim’ and ‘Jealous Lover’. You get all the singles: ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’, ‘I Surrender’, ‘Stone Cold’, Street Of Dreams’ and a live version of ‘All Night Long’, and some great upbeat tracks like ‘Lost In Hollywood’ and ‘Death Alley Driver’. There are a handful of under-rated album tracks like ‘Eyes Of The World’, ‘Eyes Of Fire’ and ‘Can’t Let You Go’, but for me ‘Spotlight Kid’ is a glaring omission and I’m pretty much against mixing studio and live tracks on a compilation. The quality of Rainbow’s back catalogue pretty much eliminates the possibility of putting out a really substandard anthology, but as good as this double CD is, I still feel it could have been a little bit better.
