In the cast Math Shiverow (vocals), Claudio Matteo (guitar), Freddy Laurence (guitar), Marc Lynn (bass) and John Dommen (drums) they take on the self-titled debut album. They receive support in the recordings of the two Crocus musicians Marc Storace (vocals) and Fernando von Arb (guitar). Storace sings some backing vocals and Von Arb wrote the song Back To You for the album.A tour as support for Victory follows the same way as another concert tour with Bonfire.Shiverow and Lynn left the band after the tour. Marc Lynn is rising a little later in the Gotthard , which are called at this time Krak. New singer is the former Krokus guitarist Patrick Mason and joins as the new bassist Brian Kofmehl of killer to the band.The next album Sign In The Sky falls, not least by working with producer Stephen Galfas from significantly more mature than the debut. The second single In The Middle Of The Night reached # 11 in the Swiss charts, the album lands at No. 2 But Mason does not stay in the band.Already on the tour he will be replaced by the American Eric St. Michaels, with China the live album Live China and the next studio album Go All The Way record. 1992 St. Michaels pulls back to America, which is why China complete the following gigs with three different singers. The main part takes Krokus singer Marc Storace. A recorded by Swiss Radio DRS Performance Live uff dr Gass of 1993 appears seven years later under the title Alive 2000 on CD.1995 China published their album Natural Groove , which comes up again with a new singer. Douglas McCowan distinguished here responsible for the vocals and the drums sits Giovanni Giorgi. After the album, the band is put on hold. In 2000, the band completed a tour China Revisited at the three singers are again at the start (Math Shiverow, Eric St. Michaels and Marc Storace).2003 come rumors that Patrick Mason (vocals), Claudio Matteo (guitar), Freddy Laurence (guitar), Brian Kofmehl (bass) and John Dommen (drums) are working on a new studio album. In May 2004, Freddy Laurence (aka Freddy Scherrer) increases as a substitute for Mandy Meyer at Gotthard one.In 2007, China reformed again and it is first time on 2 June 2007 at the Spirit of Rock together on stage again.After successful concerts in 2008 and 2009, China published in 2010 with the new guitarist Mack Schildknecht their fifth studio album in 15 years, Light Up The Dark . There follow in the summer including four as a support group of crocus.

Back in the 80’s CHINA were one of the most popular Hard Rock-Bands coming from Switzerland. Their album “Sign In The Sky” even entered the German album charts. Due to countless line-up changes the band couldn’t keep that high level and called it a day a few years later. After the comeback last year, the guys now deliver a new best of-CD. The compilation contains 13 classic tracks plus the 3 brand new songs “Girl On My Screen”, “Stay” and “Trapped In The City”.The new songs sound very strong and judged by them the band’s new studio album seems to become a great comeback record. Let’s hope the guys can keep the fire burning, then they could really compete again with GOTTHARD and KROKUS.

It was the year 1991 when, through the tip of a friend, I came across the Swiss band CHINA and their album "China Live". Already when I heard this album for the first time, it attracted me a well-groomed middle parting! From today's perspective, a century album and then in one of the X-ACT print editions deserves to be named one of the "Legendary Records Of All Times"! And with "In The Middle Of The Night", one of my personal favorite songs crystallized and it continues today and that means something! Well, the band from Winterthur released their comeback album in 2010 with "Light Up The Dark" on the market, which was not bad, but left the surprised fans with a big question mark over their heads with their untypical brutal harshness ... This year finally the new album "We Are The Stars" was released, again with the sympathetic singer Eric St. Michaels and of course with the excellent guitarist and mastermind Claudio Matteo, both at the time on the legendary live album in charge! And what brings us the current album? A new question mark over the heads? No. China have gone back to their true strengths - and that's tough melodic rock with gorgeous hooks and awesome choruses, casual guitar solos and -! - again with the addition of keyboards! China as we all know and love them are definitely back !!! Right at the beginning a rich reef: "Crazy Like You" will not burn! No question, this is China, as you know it from the past, just with the sound of modern times! The song is compositional and with regard to the arrangement right at the beginning of the album a real masterpiece! Hurray, there comes joy! The guitar solo is solid and awesome, but you did not expect anything else and Eric sings better than ever! What a song! "That's A Lot Of Love" is a riff rocker and reminds a bit of "Run To You" by Bryan Adams and that was not a bad song back then either. Again, a solo of the finest and Harmony vocals to kneel beautiful! After this AOR-cracker, which should actually run day in and day out on all radio stations of this globe, followed by song number three - "Everywhere You Are" - a very hit-suspicious song that roars so easy and cheeky out of the boxes that you almost forget that winter is coming! Summer feeling and a chorus, that in the truest sense of the word the sun rises. Wonderfully arranged and rhythmically simply endgeil! Then comes "Uninvited" a song that initially comes up with a 70ies feeling and then with stops and groovy riffs massive forwards and then again a chorus that blows everything and on the whole new Bon Jovi disc is not exactly a single song with such a strong chorus on it! That too is an indicator! "Uninvited" is a show song and with one of the best songs of this great CD! "Circles In The Sky" then has a slightly psychedelic feel, but that does not bother, because the song convinces with its very own atmosphere and the relaxed "hippie rock feeling". And for a change, of course, he also contributes. Harder it is back to "Kisses On Fire". A top-class reef-scavenger showing off this great band from their losgeh-rocker site. A party-rock song that makes you happy and excites you with its excellent harp solo. And then one of my favorite songs on this album: "Breakdown", a song that starts balladesk and then lets off a fat reef! A brilliant song that simply contains everything that makes China so cool for me: great riffs, catchy hooklines, great lead vocals, official guitar work, then a break, different riffing and a solo drummed over it! Everything was brilliantly arranged and played solidly! What a song! A synth opens "Inside Out", before a barrel-heavy riff leads the song in the direction of "New Rock". So far the by far hardest song of the album, which also has a great chorus again. With "Remember My Name" finally the first ballad? Not quite, the song turns out to be a midtempo ballad with a stadium-suited anthem chorus! Here, too, China are playing all their trumps! Also one of the strongest songs of this album! With "We Are The Stars", the title track, this excellent album ends with a first-class anthem! Geiler Song, in which the keyboards move a bit more into the foreground, then a super horny chorus, harmoniously horny and sing along compatible! 80's Hair Metal Meets the Year 2015! After listening to the album, you've listened to 10 absolute world-class songs, some of them even suspicious, if the radios were still playing rock music these days - but that's a different story ... Anyway , China are fuckin 'back!

Universal Music Japan did it again, a new campaign of their ‘HR/HM 1000‘ series – the Limited Release reissue of long time out of print albums from their Hard Rock / Heavy Metal catalog at the price of 1000 Yen = about 8 USD.Now it’s time for the second 2022 batch, ”HR-HM 1000 Vol.5”, and as part of these there’s the very good, criminally underrated “Go All The Way“, the third studio album from Swiss melodic hard rockers CHINA.For this 1991 album CHINA changed the lead vocalist – enter Eric St. Michaels – but what a great improvement. While the previous two albums from this group are awesome, “Go All The Way” is the most ‘American melodic rock’ ever from the band, and St. Michaels’ voice shine all over the record.Recorded in the USA with producer Stephan Galfas (Cher, Meat Loaf, Stryper) songs like ‘Slow Dancing in Hell’, ‘She Did a Real Good Job’, ‘Life Keeps Moving On’, ‘In Trouble With Angels’ or ‘Pictures Of You’ could have been written or recorded by the likes of Winger, Warrant or Steelheart.A band from Switzerland? If none tells you that, “Go All The Way” pass as one the most ‘American melodic rock sounding’ records appeared in 1991.This is polished, smoothly produced melodic stuff from a band that deserved stardom. There’s 15 songs in the tracklist but all are good and entertaining, so if you dig this genre then “Go All The Way” is a joy from start to finish.

A new CHINA album after…how many years, really? 1995’s “Natural Groove” was the last cut heard from the Swiss hardrockers while it’s been 21 years now from the highly-acclaimed “Sign In The Sky” days, and we should inform the readers Universal Switzerland released the “The Very Best Of China” (2008) compilation featuring three brand new tracks (all of them featured here). Well, you can’t teach an ol’ dog new tricks, right? Well, in the “Light Up The Dark” case maybe these hounds seem to have been given some extra lessons in the musicmaking class.When CHINA begun a promising career back in 1988 with “China” it was Claudio Matteo striking hard his riff and solo works, among many things CHINA became famous for. Being the only surviving member of the original lineup – singer Eric St. Michaels and bassist Brian “Beat” Kofmehl joined for the follow-up 1989 masterpiece – Claudio is the one having seen all of CHINA’s ups and downs throughout the years. Hence – maybe – the maturity/wisdom flowing from the new disc’s numbers. Of course, “Light Up The Dark” has its asskickin’ moments too but the key factor here should be the - modern or lunar - rockin’ vibe floating in this recent album.The same-title track storms in and it’s tome for some hardrockin’ shakin to the spitfiring guitars, drums and bass, an ideal companion to your Saturday club nights. “Hey Yo” is the kind of song I’d never be ready to listen to from a band like CHINA. The melodic bridge/chorus is OK but the guitars sound – this goes for the whole album, really – is too fuzzy/modern for the band’s core fan base, I’m afraid. “She’s Hot” is groovy and should leave no hip unshaken, while “Girl On The Screen” is a killer rollin’ thunder resembling to CHINA’s best moments off the first two albums (or – for the younger fans - to GOTTHARD’s dynamic likes). “Lonely Rider” is as American as it can get, with a slice of ‘just US Rock’ aura in the vocal harmonies and basic riff…leading us to “Gates Of Heaven”’s emotional breeze; a slow cut bringing on memories of sweet power ballads in the late 80s/early 90s but with the late BON JOVI/JOURNEY sonic aesthetics.“On My Way” is interesting but more of a ‘happy’ number in the CHEAP TRICK way - than I can get from a band like CHINA, haha; Marc Storace (the legendary KROKUS singer) sings backing vocals here. “Stay” is again in this ‘Rock mode on’ mature e.g. WARRANT path with a vintage wah-wah solo shining. “Deadly Sweet” boasts a weird riff and alike vocal harmonies, quite ‘grunge’-isque for my taste; the solo is awesome, though. “Trapped In The City” brings forth the in-your-face riffing and pounding creating a boozin’ mood again. “Right Here, Right Now” impedes things a little bit sending 70s-to-90s shivers down your spine and – surprisingly – can hold as an attraction for the whole album. “Flesh And Bone”’s groovy tempo says goodbye in a fresh way and 45-50 minutes has passed by leading to a diverse conclusion that……CHINA has progressed or matured or settled down or whatever you like to name it, in this new album. Erik’s vocals are warmer and less rebellious, the guitars rock hard but also ride free being applicable to all Rock fans, vintage, typical or contemporary, building an album that gradually won my ears since – in a way – you match the CD’s criteria; we’ve also grown up, like it or not. “Light Up The Dark” resembles to a long lost friend: we ‘ve not met in years, each one’s built his own beliefs all this time but what counts is that the feeling is here and it’s good to spend some time with good company again, no questions asked.

Formed by drummer John Dommen and guitarist Freddy Laurence, the duo quickly teamed up with vocalist Math Shiverow, ex-Bloody Six guitarist Claudio Matteo and former Stormbringer bassist Mac Lynn.Having gained a deal with Polygram, China were assisted in the recording of that first LP by Krokus vocalist Marc Storace, who also contributed backing vocals, while also Krokus guitarist Fernando Von Arb helped with songwriting.With a major label behind, the Swiss rockers flew to NY to record their 2nd album with Stephan Galfas (Cher, Meat Loaf, Stryper) producing & mixing it at the legendary Electric Lady Studios. In the cast Math Shiverow (vocals), Claudio Matteo (guitar), Freddy Laurence (guitar), Marc Lynn (bass) and John Dommen (drums) they take on the self-titled debut album. They receive support in the recordings of the two Crocus musicians Marc Storace (vocals) and Fernando von Arb (guitar). Storace sings some backing vocals and Von Arb wrote the song Back To You for the album.A tour as support for Victory follows the same way as another concert tour with Bonfire.Shiverow and Lynn left the band after the tour. Marc Lynn is rising a little later in the Gotthard , which are called at this time Krak. New singer is the former Krokus guitarist Patrick Mason and joins as the new bassist Brian Kofmehl of killer to the band.The next album Sign In The Sky falls, not least by working with producer Stephen Galfas from significantly more mature than the debut. The self-titled debut album by Swiss Melodic Hard Rock / AOR combo CHINA was remastered for the first time by YesterRock specialists (although not printed on the artwork due to license reasons), now a not easy to find disc.Depending the country of release, the original edition of “China” featured a different track list. This reissue include all tracks, plus the rare ‘When Passion Burns’ (not listed as bonus track though).If you love late ’80s catchy melodic hard rock with AOR waves here and there, you need to check out this album now.China born in 1985 by drummer John Dommen including into the line up Math Shiverow (vocals), Claudio Matteo (guitar), Freddy Laurence (guitar) and Marc Lynn (bass) and after some demos Phonogram resulted very interested in the band due their similarity in sound with Europe, a sensation at the moment.They stated to work on the self-titled debut album receiving support at the recordings of the two Krokus musicians Marc Storace (vocals) and Fernando von Arb (guitar). Storace sings some backing vocals and Von Arb wrote the song “Back To You”.The goal here was to create catchy, radiable melodic rock songs with AOR touches, heavy synths and multi-layered choruses.While China’s sound on this album is pretty Americanized to conquer the US market (something augmented in China’s awesome 2nd album), they still has some of that ‘Euro bite’, especially on some edgy guitar riffs in the style of Europe / Norum or TNT.You can’t go wrong with any title here, all are killer tunes such as ‘Hot Lovin’ Night’ (the more AOR and my favorite), ‘Shout it Out’, ‘Don’t Look Back’ and the anthemic ‘One Shot To The Heart’ and ‘Wild Jealousy’.Vocalist Math Shiverow is another factor adding some ‘bite’ to the album, as he comes from the traditional metal scene, and this adds a special charm to the songs (he was replaced for the second album by the more melodic Patrick Mason).“China”, the self-titled debut by these Swiss guys still is pretty unknown for American melodic rock fans, but not for sure in Europe.That’s why Universal Music Europe few years ago decided to reissue the album for the first time since its original edition and commissioned a remastering to YesterRock headquarters. The result is a blast compared to the low signal original CD.“China” is a fantastic album from beginning to end, believe me.
