Bio:

Tesla is an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1982. They have sold 14 million albums in the United States. In late 1982, bassist Brian Wheat (age 20) and guitarist Frank Hannon (age 15) formed City Kidd, a band that then spent time gigging at Sacramento's defunct Oasis Ballroom. They also began working with American rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose towards writing hard rock hit singles, reasoning "We wanted to get signed, and we thought the way to do that was to write a hit single."New producers and managers turned the group towards radio pop rock and, to come up with the appropriate material, band manager Steve Clausman hired Grammy award winner Duane Hitchings, who provided the music to Rod Stewart songs such as "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Infatuation". A representative from Geffen Records then saw where the City Kidd band was headed and let them know that he would only sign them if they "from the gut and not from formulas."By 1986, the band had again changed its direction under a new name, Tesla. The band City Kidd was renamed Tesla during the recording of their first album, 1986's Mechanical Resonance, on the advice of their manager that City Kidd was not a great name (in addition, there was already another band going by that name). The band derived their name, certain album and song titles, and some song content from events relating to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Along with the band's next two studio albums, Mechanical Resonance was produced by Michael Barbiero and Steve Thompson. The band's original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch, bassist Brian Wheat, and drummer Troy Luccketta.Tesla's music is often referred to as hard rock or hair metal. The band's lyrics also strayed from the themes popular in hard rock, particularly in the 1980s at the beginning of their career. In the early days of their career, Tesla toured with David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, and Poison which resulted in the band being categorized as a glam metal band. The band's members resented this labelling. The band was booed off the stage while opening for Def Leppard at Calgary, which was unfair as they were playing well, but were then hardly known and the crowd wanted the main act.It was three years before the band released their second album, The Great Radio Controversy. The album helped solidify the band's growing reputation and fan base. The album produced the hit single, a classic '80s power ballad "Love Song".In 1990, Tesla released Five Man Acoustical Jam, a live album featuring acoustic renditions of hits such as "Comin' Atcha Live", "Gettin' Better", "Modern Day Cowboy", and "Love Song". The album also featured a number of covers most notably a version of "Signs", a 1971 hit by the Five Man Electrical Band.In 1991 the band released their third studio album Psychotic Supper. The band itself considers this to be their best album according to their official web site. The 1998 Japanese reissue import of Psychotic Supper contains three previously unreleased songs, including "Rock the Nation", "I Ain't Superstitious", and "Run Run Run".In 1994 the band released their fourth studio album Bust a Nut. The 1998 Japanese reissue import of Bust a Nut contains the previously unreleased cover of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean".After the release of Bust a Nut, Skeoch departed because of his struggle with substance abuse. He rejoined after completing rehab, only to depart again months later. The band moved forward as a four piece for a short while. However, it wasn't long before Skeoch briefly joined up with solo artist Marshall Coleman's band to support his solo career, only to see a departure of Marshall soon after. This band eventually morphed to include Jeff Keith and resurfaced as Bar 7 with a single "Four Leaf Clover", from the album The World Is a Freak. Brian Wheat formed Soulmotor and Frank Hannon Moon Dog Mane, while Troy Luccketta worked with several local artists including the Bay Area's One Thin Dime. After a break of six years, the Sacramento Bee reported that the band had reformed in 2000 with the help of local radio personality Pat Martin of KRXQ. The band played an emotional sold out show at Arco Arena in Sacramento on October 25, 2000. Soon after they recorded the double live album Replugged Live. In 2002 they were featured in the Rock Never Stops Tour alongside other 1980s rock bands.2002 saw the release of a further live album Standing Room Only which is just a single CD version of Replugged Live.In 2004 they released their fifth studio album Into the Now which debuted on the Billboard album chart at number 30. The album was well received by fans and the band was featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.In February 2005, Tesla headlined a benefit show at the PPAC in Providence, Rhode Island for the victims of the Station nightclub fire. During the show the band auctioned off an autographed acoustic guitar with the proceeds going to the Station Family Fund. 100% of the ticket sales also went to this charity. In the summer of 2006, the band embarked on the Electric Summer Jam Tour without guitarist Tommy Skeoch. Skeoch had left the band indefinitely to spend time with his family, and, as he later revealed on "The Classic Metal Show," other reasons; particularly his problems with substance abuse.[4][5] Dave Rude replaced Skeoch on the tour and has remained with the band ever since."Cumin' Atcha Live" appeared in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.Tesla recorded a two-volume collection of cover songs titled Real to Reel, which was released on June 5, 2007. The recording is available as a 2-CD set. The first CD (containing 13 songs) is sold in a case with a blank slot for the second CD. The second CD (containing 12 additional songs) will initially be available to concert goers in the USA at no additional charge beyond the cost of a ticket. The second CD was also given away with the August edition of Classic Rock magazine in Europe. At the end of August Tesla announced their first world tour in 16 years with dates in Australia, Japan, and Europe in October and November 2007.In February 2008, Tesla helped fund and headlined a benefit concert for victims of the Station nightclub fire. The show was broadcast by VH1 Classic. Tesla played three songs: "What You Give", "Signs", and "Love Song", though "What You Give" did not make it onto the broadcast. In June and July 2008, Tesla played a few shows in Europe and the USA, including Sweden Rock Festival, Graspop Metal Meeting and Rocklahoma.

Album:

Two CD set. All songs digitally remastered, extensive liner notes and special photos. Tesla were classic rock at its purest and its most honest, twin guitars raging, bass and drums pounding, the whole team marching to the same compulsive beat and they have remained true to those qualities ever since. This is the first double disc collection of the best tracks from these platinum - selling rockers! This comprehensive collection, ranging from 1986 through 2007, presents 32 classic tracks and collectibles, including their chart hits. 'Signs', 'Love Song' and 'The Way It Is.' Fan and band favorites like their covers of 'Rock The Nation' (Montrose), 'Love In Vain' (the Rolling Stones), 'I Ain't Superstitious' (the Jeff Beck Group), as well as 'The Ocean' and 'Thank You,' both songs originally by Led Zeppelin, a band that was a major influence on Tesla, are also in the set.

Album:

"Mechanical Resonance" is the cracking debut album by TESLA, reissued in Japan on SHM-CD in remastered form back in 2011. This was the only, Limited Release of the first 5 Tesla albums on SHM-CD now out of print and fetching high prices on eBay.Tesla came out of the gates with everything in its right place: a major label (Geffen), great producers (Thompson & Barbiero) and the best management you could ask for (Q Prime). The band were and are all top drawer musicians, and they had a batch of killer rootsy hard rock ready to record. Ready, set, go!When Tesla's debut "Mechanical Resonance" was released in December 1986, it made a major impact among the dominating glammy hard rock scene.Of course with the typical, glossy and 'big' production of the era, but much musically more 'classic rock' oriented, with a bluesy spirit.Tesla have never done anything wimpy. Whatever they do, they inject muscle into, even the ballads.“EZ Come EZ Go”, the opening salvo, is surprisingly tough for the era. Starting dark and ominous, it only takes a verse before it turns to scorch mode. Singer Jeff “JK” Keith proved his versatility immediately on this track. From whimpering tones to belting at the top of the lungs, JK did it with rasp and incredible lung power. Backing him are the underrated guitar duo of Frankie Hannon and Tommy Skeoch, a six-string tag team to rival the big boys.“Cumin’ Atcha Live” starts with Van Halen-esque blitzing, except with two guitarists instead of one, fretboards ablaze. Tesla were known as one of the “nice guys” bands of rock, in contrast to bad boys like Motley Crue. Troy Luccketta is a drummer with a recognizable style, you can hear it in the way he rides the cymbals. The album generated quite a few single/videos, and “Gettin’ Better” was an easy selection. The mellow, ballady (but soulful) opening is just a feint. This turns into a good time rocker in no time.“2 Late 4 Love” is not a Def Leppard song, nor Prince. It is however pure hard rock. With a Motley chug and a Dokken vibe, it’s not really representative of where Tesla was headed, but it’s good enough. “Rock Me To the Top” occupies a similar chug with high quality results. The slow, bluesy number (whick picks up at the ending) “We’re No Good Together” is designed for Jeff Keith vocals to shine, especially for the slow, soulful parts. What a singer!“Modern Day Cowboy” is one of Tesla’s trademark tunes today, with its smoking riffs and killer acoustics, then “Changes” is a great, heavy ballad with loads of guitars and tasteful keys too. I don’t even think I should be calling this a ballad. It burns rubber like there’s no tomorrow when it’s time for it.Since this time, Tesla have become known for performing some amazing covers, both hits and obscure. “Little Suzi” is the first, and I’d never heard of the band Ph.D. of whom this is a cover. Even if I had, Tesla’s version of the song is diametrically opposed to the dramatic synthpop original, which was titled “Little Suzi’s on the Up”. Tesla do it as a bonfire acoustic/electric rocker complete with a pretty acoustic intro. It is instantly likeable. Bon Jovi once said “the way to tell if a song is good is to see if it works acoustically.” If that is true, then Tesla have proven this of “Little Suzi”.Similarly upbeat and irresistible is “Love Me”, featuring a juicy talkbox solo by Tommy Skeoch. The song has a nice big riff and plenty of hooks to go around.“Cover Queen” is a smoky rocker with ammunition to spare, but it is “Before My Eyes” the tour de force on the album. It’s risky to close a record with a slow, trippy long bomber (5:31, longest on the album). “Before My Eyes” is not an instant love, but over time it grows and grows. The psychedelic voices at the end can be heard to be saying “Is it a dream?” over and over, very trippy indeed! Awesome track."Mechanical Resonance" brought into the '80s US Hard Rock scene one of the most distinctive - and best - bands of the era, which continue creating excellent nowadays. This Japanese remaster on SHM-CD sounds incredible. Certainly these Tesla albums on this format need an urgent re-release / re-print. I seen used copies of this one on eBay for over $150.

Album:

"The Great Radio Controversy" is second TESLA album, reissued in Japan on SHM-CD in remastered form back in 2011. This was the only, Limited Release of the first 5 Tesla albums on SHM-CD now out of print and fetching high prices on eBay.Considered by many the best Tesla album ever, "The Great Radio Controversy" retains the typical big-sounding production and anthemic hooks of '80s pop-metal, but Tesla adds a grittier, bluesier edge to their music than most of their peers. As on most of their records Tesla's songwriting is consistently good, and alongside instant rockers such as 'Hang Tough' and the rich-harmony 'Lady Luck', there's 'The Way It Is' or 'Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)' with melodies and riffs that aren't predictable, cookie-cutter product. All songs in this album are goodies, but my favorite should be 'The Way It Is'. Co-written by drummer Troy Luccketta it's one of the highlights of album as well as Tesla’s career. The moody acoustic intro and verse eventually gives way to the strong yet deep choruses. The song’s bridge and outro bring the song to a whole new level sonically as repetition works well with theme and musical backing and Jeff Keith’s vocals are at their absolute zenith during the whole track.'Love Song' is nearly as impressive, being perhaps the best power ballad ever. This uni-directional song is driven by the beautiful guitar motifs of guitarist Frank Hannon. Commencing with a complex acoustic intro before moving towards the joyful strummed electric riff that introduces the song proper. The track is complete and melodic to the end without a wasted note or moment.'Paradise' is another fine number that contains a sad acoustic intro to a love song with a distinctly different feel than 'Love Song'. Keith’s vocals pick up the pace while the music remains low key in the mid section prior to a funk-influenced alternate section which follows.Double Platinum certified, "The Great Radio Controversy"reached the Top 20 of the American album charts and spawned three Top 40 hits, with videos receiving considerable MTV airplay that rocketed Tesla to stardom. What I like about this remaster is the way the acoustic guitar parts and the bass have 'reborn' on this SHM-CD. Certainly these Tesla albums on this format need an urgent re-release / re-print.

Album:

French reissue label Bad Reputation has been doing a great job releasing 'Collector Series / Remastered with Bonus', with the main attraction being, on most releases, the addition of a bonus disc, making these reissues the 'definitive expanded versions'. In a Rock Candy Records fashion, these are official remasters in arrangement with the original recording companies. In the case of TESLA's "Psychotic Supper" (for many, their finest moment), we have the main album remastered plus an extra CD with hard to find songs. When the Sacramento-based band delivered its third album, which was released in August 1991, it came out under the title "Psychotic Supper", a banner that Hannon says is very appropriate for the state of the band at that point. But it was also an appropriate callback to their namesake.“We were psycho, man," Hannon recalls. "We were going crazy. We were in New York, we were living in Manhattan, going out to the clubs, meeting new people, hanging out with punk rockers, smoking crack, running around down in the village, you know, just being crazy. And then tying it into Tesla, Nikola Tesla had his own psychosis regarding eating food and he didn’t like certain things on his plate, he had to arrange his dinnerware and his silverware in certain ways in order to eat."So I thought it was kind of a fun, clever little title that kind of reminded me of like something that Aerosmith would do. Aerosmith was one of my favorite bands, and you know, 'Toys in the Attic', 'Rats in the Cellar,' the titles that they used, I thought Psychotic Supper had that vibe.”After two successful albums and the huge success of Five Man Acoustical Jam, Hannon says that they hit the studio with a lot of confidence and egos blazing.“We were a little older and we had progressed in our attitude," he recalls. "We were more confident -- we were definitely overly confident and definitely at that point, we had reached the point of saying f--- you to everybody."Psychotic Supper" was definitely our f--- you album, to the industry and to the people that were controlling us. Like I said, that ultimately bit us in the ass, because we self-destructed and then when we tried to make a comeback, it’s taken us until now to finally f---ing be able to do it.”For Tesla, part of that rebellion found them digging through a good amount of material that they had wanted to include on The Great Radio Controversy that had been rejected.“A lot of the songs were outtakes and stuff that didn’t end up on our second record," Hannon says. "We were rebellious and we said, ‘We’re doing those f---ing songs -- we don’t care what anybody thinks.Like, a song like ‘Change in the Weather,’ the first track, we had that song down. I mean, we loved that song. They didn’t let us put it on The Great Radio Controversy, so we knew we were putting that song on the record -- we were fighting for it."Tesla, once referred to as the “thinking man’s Van Halen,” definitely used their musical canvas again on "Psychotic Supper" to put some thoughts out there, with songs that delved into a number of topics, including what had been happening with Operation Desert Storm.'What You Give’ and ‘Freedom Slaves’ and songs like that had more depth to them and reality than just your regular party anthems.'Edison’s Medicine' driven by the twin guitar attack of Hannon and guitarist Tommy Skeoch, is one of a number of full-throttle rockers that you'll find on "Psychotic Supper" that represented the group’s attempt “to expose a lot of the fraud and stuff that was going on.”'Call It What You Want' is one of the most striking songs with the moody and melodic intro morphing into an exciting, upbeat theme with dynamic vocals and sonically pleasing guitar accents.'Don’t De-rock Me' is a blazing tune that talks about what people want to hear. 'No time for f@cking around with mediocrity, takes everything I’ve got just trying to be me.' It’s surely not a classic, but it’s balls out rock.Slowing it down is 'Song & Emotion', written for ‘Steamin’ Steve Clark — R.I.P. — guitarist for Def Leppard. A soulful, heartfelt tribute in the beginning, which blows up into a hard rock song.'Freedom Slaves' is rockin' with excellent musicianship, while 'Government Personnel' is a pure acoustic, near-spoof that lasts barely a minute but is still very entertaining. The highly suggestive 'Toke About It' uses Van Halen-like showmanship rock to close out the album in the vein of early Tesla. The bonus disc of this Bad Reputation remaster is great. We have all the B-sides from the several singles the album generated, such as 'Children's Heritage', 'Run Run Run', and their cover of the classic 'Ain't Superstitious', some of these also featured as Japanese bonus tracks.Additionally there's the rare mix of 'Song And Emotion [Rockline Version]' and some juicy live cuts. For many fans and critics, Tesla reach their peak with "Psychotic Supper". The musicianship throughout is unbelievable, and the writing is first class. It's by far, their most diverse album, exploring different tempos, new themes, and unleashing each band member’s creative potential.A MUST HAVE, definitive version of this great album.

The band is thrilled to announce the release of a live recording of their classic album, “Mechanical Resonance LIVE!”, celebrating the original multi-Platinum record’s 30th birthday in style. With a few surprises up their sleeve, including the single “Save That Goodness” written and produced by Phil Collen of Def Leppard, the album will be released on August 26th (Tesla Electric Company Recordings/Mailboat). Click HERE to listen. The record is being released in conjunction with Tesla’s summer tour opening up for Def Leppard, where they will perform in front of over half a million fans.Said Frank Hannon, “30 years later and the songs on our first album still rock! Making this new live album of Mechanical Resonance was a reminder of the innocence and creative beginnings of Tesla.”Added Brian Wheat, “It was a lot of fun to re-visit some of the songs we hadn’t played in decades and had a great time recording it. “Over the course of their thirty-year career, which started in 1986, the iconic Sacramento melodic hard rock quintet—Frank Hannon [guitar], Brian Wheat [bass], Jeff Keith [lead vocals], Troy Luccketta [drums], and Dave Rude [guitar]—has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and played to sold out crowds across the globe, their three albums that followed “Mechanical Resonance” all went multi-Platinum. To say Tesla live is absolutely bombastic is an understatement, they are a hard rock band to beat all hard rock bands. The 21st century has become something of a renaissance for Tesla. Most recently, 2014’s Simplicity bowed at #14 on the Billboard Top 200. The group ignited ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! in addition to scorching stages at festivals such as Rocklahoma, Graspop Metal Meeting, and Sweden Rock Festival as

Album:

Bust a Nut is the fourth studio album by Tesla, released in 1994. It was their final studio album on Geffen Records before the band split. The album was certified gold by RIAA on March 16, 1995. In November 2011, Bust a Nut was ranked number ten (preceded by R.E.M.'s Monster) on Guitar World magazine's top ten list of guitar albums of 1994.During my first few weeks at the Record Store, one of the new releases I got to deal with was the new Tesla, Bust a Nut. My boss cracked open a copy to play in store, but he wasn’t impressed.“It sounds the same…” he remarked. “It’s just the same.” Gosh, Tesla didn’t go grunge or rap in 1994? What a crime. No, instead Tesla stubbornly continued, as they always have, without bowing to trends. Bust a Nut wasn’t a successful album, but it was a damn good one. To call Bust a Nut “the same” sells it short. It sounded like Tesla, but a tad heavier and more diverse. Of course, this being Tesla, there must be ballads too.“The Gate” invites you in via chugging guitars and squealing six-strings. It merges into “Invited”, a hell of a fine introduction. “Invited” reflects the light and shade of Tesla in one song: the mournful acoustic verses, the heavy and catchy choruses, all grounded in a solid classic rock vibe. Tommy Skeoch and Frank Hannon made one fine guitar duo, and the layers of instrumental goodness will keep you interested and digging for more. Heavier still is “The Solution”, which is about as metal as Tesla have ever been. Songs about environmental conservation are more relevant than ever: “Mother nature’s on her knees, and we’re the reason for her disease.” Very true, Jeff Keith. “If we’re gonna make it through tomorrow, the solution is to make a change today.” Tesla have never used such a grinding, detuned riff like this before. What’s this about it being “just the same”? Tesla didn’t go grunge, but they were able to go harder within their own style.A brilliant track called “Shine Away” uses the soft/loud dynamic popularized by grunge, but that chorus is brighter than the sun. Enjoy some patented Tesla guitar harmonies which always sound as if inspired by Thin Lizzy, though this time verging on Iron Maiden! Time to cool things down with a ballad, and “Try So Hard” is a lovely one in the acoustic mold. A good variety of tunes occupy the rest of side one, but the next obvious standout is “Action Talks”. This is as angry as Tesla get, even dropping a “fuck you!” in the lyrics. It’s difficult to imagine that the same band can do “Action Talks” and “Try So Hard”!Bluegrass and heavy bluesy rock collide on “Mama’s Fool”, as Tesla have never been afraid to mix genres. Sharp fans will recognize the opening and closing acoustic patterns as the same as “Government Personnel” from Psychotic Supper (1991). A slamming beat drives the tense “Cry”, a killer track based on a simple riff. Dig that theremin! “Rubberband” returns to the soft/loud format, and the loud part is fucking killer. The chorus goes on for days and sticks like glue. Another heavy groove called “Earthmover” earns its title, but some of the best tracks on side two are the ballads. “A Lot to Lose” is likeable, and “Wonderful World” begins with a southern acoustic flavour. Best of all is the fun closer, the old Joe South hit “Games People Play”. It’s Tesla-fied, and the sitar is ditched in favour of more traditional rock instrumentation. It’s transformed into a soul-gospel-rock and roll good time.Tesla fired Tommy Skeoch (too many drug problems) and went down to a quartet before splitting up. Thankfully they have enjoyed a long and quality-driven reunion since 2001. Bust a Nut is an unsung highlight of their catalogue, and an album you’d be well advised to pick up.

Album:

Into the Now is the fifth studio album by the rock band Tesla. Following a six-year hiatus due to Tommy Skeoch's rehabilitation for drug abuse, Tesla reunited for this album released in 2004. One of the hard rock heavyweights of the 80's, Tesla has returned with an album of new material. Along with bands like Skid Row, Motley Crue and even to some extent, Queensryche, these artists saw their popularity dwindle in the early to mid 90's due to the surge in the alternative and grunge rock scene with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam literally ripping the ground out from underneath them and stealing away many fans of some of the most established and also very successful acts from th 80's. The musical climate changed almost overnight with the release of Nirvana's Nevermind album and Tesla was one of the casualities of the new era. Their first three albums, Mechanical Resonance, The Great Radio Controversy and Psychotic Supper all achieved platinum status, with The Great Radio Controversy actually achieving double platinum status. The multi-platinum unplugged album, Five Man Acoustical Jam, followed on the heels of Eric Clapton's Unplugged album and was one of the first hard rock acts to do an acoustic live album. With a smash hit single for their cover of the Five Man Electrical Band's Signs, they seemed to be at the top of the hard rock heep. Their songs were catchy, very radio-friendly and they were one of the more popular hard rock acts of the 80's. In 1994, they released Bust A Nut, right at the height of the grunge rock era and it barely achieved gold status. Tesla never really recovered from that and with the ever changing musical climate in North America and the fact that they were a band that was so characteristic of the 80's sound that the grunge artists were revolting against, their popularity suffered and they called it a day. A couple of years ago, the band regrouped and decided to go out on the road, recording a very successful live album, Replugged Live. Putting aside personal and musical differences between members of the band, they went into the studio to write and record new material some two years ago. Using guitarist Frank Hannon's home studio, there was no pressure, no deadlines and expenses were kept to a minimum. Ending up with almost 30 new songs, the 12 best were kept and ended up on this album, Into The Now, the first new studio album from Tesla in almost 10 years.Although this album has many classic Telsa elements, the one thing for sure is that they've been keeping their ears open to the current popular hard rock and metal scene with several tracks namely the title track, Into The Now using modern and booming heavy riffing styles, very abstract leads, lots of Wah effects and some vocal styles that are a bit out of character. The choruses pretty much resemble the Tesla of old but a handful of tracks such as the title track, Look @ Me, Miles Away, Got No Glory and Recognize featuring a more aggressive and modern hard rock sound. There's still more than enough on this album to satisfy fans of their classic style with tracks like What A Shame, Words Can't Explain, Come To Me and especially Caught In A Dream which has the sound and feel of their big hit Love Song from the late 80's. By and large, they've avoided doing any of the syrupy love ballad type of songs that they've done in the past and only the last track, Only You actually falls into the acoustic ballad category. Several other tracks feature a mix of lighter passages with heavier sections for the big soaring trademark Tesla choruses.I was a little surprised by the sound of some of this album at first with the incorporation of newer modern sounds into their music but after repeated listens, I've come to enjoy this new aspect of their sound. I'm glad they just didn't come out and rehash The Great Radio Controversy and although many songs here sound similar to that era of the band, there's a fresh new energy and intensity, all the while maintaining the quality that we've come to expected from them. It seems like they're trying to shed the "typical 80's band" label that they've always had stamped on them and take themselves and their fans to a new level of respectability in today's modern music scene. This album's not really a ground-breaking album nor is it likely to attract any new fans but for fans of the classic old Tesla sound, this is exactly what they've been waiting for. It's an album that is full of quality and very catchy songs much in the same tradition of classic albums from their past and is one that is really targeted for the fans. It's a surprising return to form and one that has lots of great catchy tunes encompassing a wide range of styles and lots of variety in the songwriting. Welcome back guys, I haven't played a Tesla CD in many years before this one and now I find myself dusting some of them off and finding that I actually still enjoy them after all these years.

Album:

It was, though, something of a shock to find out that “Shock” was only the eighth album of Tesla’s career. They’d been a staple of our early record buying. “Mechanical Resonance” came out in the autumn of 1986, when we were voraciously consuming anything that came out from the US and all those bands changed my life. Then, a few years later they released an acoustic album, “The Five Man Acoustical Jam” that opened our minds to different sounds.Like – nearly – all the bands from that era, though, Tesla struggled once Kurt decided he wanted entertaining in a different way and brought a generation with him.Since reforming in 2004 they’ve stuck some records out, but let’s get it said right now. None of them have been anywhere near as good as “Shock”.To make this record, interestingly, they turned to an artist from a band that never quit in when the 90s took a swipe at arena rock. Phil Collen produces this, co-writes the thing, and he does a mighty job in truth. One of the key things about Tesla in 2019 is that four fifth’s of them were Tesla in ’86 and whatever frustrations they felt after their last record “Simplicity” in 2014 (when they admitted they were not going to make another album) are blown away by the time the intro to “You Won’t Take Me Alive”, which sounds sleazy and as more full of beans than a band four decades into their career has any right to. It swaggers, it crunches, it is – to all intents and purposes – just happy to be here.“Taste Like” is proudly rooted in the 80s, but not in a dated way, and whatever else Collen learned from Mutt Lange, then the importance of a chorus that soars, seems to have been right at the top.Bands often say, “oh, we don’t sound like anyone else” and generally it is hogwash. In Tesla’s case, though, it kind of rings true, certainly they plough a different furrow to their peers. “We Can Rule The World” has echoes of The Beatles, for example, but done through a prism of hard rock. Then they follow it up with the title track, which if not a shock per se, then jars with its electro beat. One thing that all these bands always had, though was a big old ballad. And “Shock” has “Love Is A Fire” – and if you can, unsurprisingly hear some Leps influences throughout, then let’s be real here, this one is “When Love And Hate Collide” rebadged.Much better is “California Summer Song” which injects some real sunshine over a track that will you have you reaching for your old Everclear stuff. “Forever Loving You” is another ballad – of course it is – but it is more overtly pop than power, Daughtry would be sticking another Gold Disc up in their houses if they’d got this. It’s personal taste, of course, but the rockier moments are where “Shock” scores, and also where it does things you don’t expect. “The Mission” broods more than most, and “Tied To The Tracks” may well be the best of all. It’s slide guitar is imbued with a real urgency. There is some damn fine twin guitar in the effortless cool of “Afterlife” – which would have “massive radio hit” written all over it, if such things mattered these days – “I Want Everything” is more muscular and a wonderful example to the Bon Jovi’s of this world that growing old doesn’t always have to mean going middle of the road.Tellingly, the record ends with a track called “Comfort Zone” which grooves along on the back of a truly filthy sounding bass line, but which also, maybe, is indicative of a band that challenged itself this time around.Never ones, in truth, to follow the herd, on “Shock” Tesla really do sound electric.

Album:

Do you remember TESLA ‘Five Man Acoustical Jam’, right? Back in 1990 it was one of the first ‘unplugged era’ albums, and one of the best. Fast forward 30 years, and the Sacramento, California, rockers will be releasing their new “five man” acoustic album but this time titled “Five Man London Jam”. The set was recorded live at the renowned Abbey Road Studios in London, UK on June 12, 2019.As happened with the 1990 previous “five man” album, at many places the pristine sound quality seems multi-track studio than live. And all band members deliver excellent performances.Tesla remake history with ‘Five Man London Jam’, in a good way. The album was recorded at London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios last June, and is named in homage to the band’s million-selling 1990 album ‘Five Man Acoustical Jam’.However, while there’s songs from that iconic first unplugged record ‘Five Man Acoustical Jam’, the band did many of the new songs from the 2019 album ‘Shock’, and it’s great to listen to these in an unplugged format, like only Tesla can do.

Album:

TESLA is a notorious band for one thing; being a high-energy, 100% live, kick-ass rock and roll band in concert! FULL THROTTLE LIVE captures this essence from a stop at the Sturgis Bike rally in the year 2022 at the infamous saloon that hosts many motorcycle rock and roll parties, and this inspired the band to put on even more of a heavy show. Independently recorded, mixed, and produced by guitarist Frank Hannon and bassist Brian Wheat, this new live album truly captures TESLA in pure honest form and even dives deeper into their roots by recording a live version of the 1974 Aerosmith classic “SOS Too Bad” as a bonus track. The heavier song choices range from “Miles Away!” to more recent hard releases like “Time to Rock!” and “Cold Blue Steel”. But don’t worry there are old TESLA classics captured too like “Changes” and “Lazy Days, Crazy Nights” all recorded as TESLA is best..100% FULL THROTTLE LIVE!
