Bio:

Coney Hatch is a Canadian hard rock band who released three albums in the 1980s. Based in Toronto, Ontario, the band consists of vocalist and guitarist Carl Dixon who would also go on to play with April Wine and a Burton Cummings-less Guess Who for several years, as well as touring solo and releasing at least two solo albums; vocalist and bassist Andy Curran who had his own solo album featuring the semi-hits, "License to Love" and "No Tattoos"; guitarist Steve Shelski who has written several instrumentals for TSN; and drummer Dave 'Thumper' Ketchum. They released their first album in 1982. Ketchum left the band in 1983, and was replaced by Barry Connors who formerly drummed with Toronto. In April, 2008 Carl Dixon was very seriously injured in a car accident in Australia. On August 5, 2010 the original Coney Hatch line up including the now recovered Carl Dixon played a reunion show at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. It was the first performance from the original line up since 1993. A further live date was scheduled for the Firefest rock festival in Nottingham, England on 23 October 2011.Coney Hatch is scheduled to perform at the Rock n' Roar weekend event August 16 & 17, 2013.

Album:

It's one of the finest rocking albums coming out from Canada during the first half of the '80s.With a name derived from 'Colney Hatch', which at the time was the location of a Victorian lunatic asylum, home to 3,500 mental patients in North London, this Canadian four-piece were much more than your average early Eighties rock band.Whereas many of their US counterparts chose to rely on big hair & party anthems, Coney Hatch - based in Toronto Rock City - had an altogether more twisted take on the Great Rock’n'Roll Dream (and big hair!).From the striking sleeve art onwards, ‘Coney Hatch’ - the album - was different. A happy (if unconventional) marriage of rolling riffs & off-kilter melodies, topped off with lyrics that were as likely to take a scenic shortcut as stick to the beaten path.Produced by legendary Canadian artist Kim Mitchell (of Max Webster fame), these 10 songs are some of the best examples of ‘Maple Leaf Mayhem’ you’re likely to hear.Ray Danniels, Rush manager and boss of Anthem Records signed Coney Hatch and before they knew it, the band were in the studio to record their debut album. These 10 songs, although rocking and kickin', are extremely melodic and catchy such as opener "Devil's Deck" (featuring chorus vocals from producer Kim Mitchell), "You Ain't Got Me", the energetic "No Sleep Tonight".But the real strength of the album was its diversity and tracks like the bouncy "Monkey Bars" or the excellent, AORish "Hey Operator", covered one year after by Aldo Nova on his 1983 solo album Subject. This re-issue comes with no less than three bonus tracks from the original sessions: the rocking "Dreamland", "Where I Draw The Line" showing a different side of the band including pianos, and the good sounding demo "Sin After Sin".On this kind of old recordings is where you can appreciate a good remaster, and Rock Candy has done another fine job here.

Album:

We already featured here some albums from one of the most underrated Canadian bands of the '80s: CONEY HATCH. Remastered & Reloaded by Rock Candy Records, and appeared on CD for the first time, the band's second effort "Outa Hand" is a hell of a rocking album.Their highly respected self-titled debut album (also available on the blog) garnered much international acclaim, especially in the United Kingdom, allowing the Canadian four piece to unleash an even more impressive sophomore LP.Issued in 1982, and produced by English maverick Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T), the band succeeded in crafting an album that many regard as their greatest work.Combining the best of both worlds - that's melody and muscle - into one remarkable package, "Outa Hand" went on to establish Coney Hatch as arguably one of the most endearing and successful Canadian rock acts of the Eighties, being MTV regulars and supporting metal icons Iron Maiden on a sold out North American arena tour. From the punch of 'Don't Say Make Me' and melody of 'First Time For Everything', to the rockin' 'Some Like It Hot' & the catchy 'Fallen Angel' to the nice, smooth, feel-good ballads 'To Feel The Feeling Again' & 'Music Of The Night', there is not a weak track here. Now available for the first time on CD, Coney Hatch's "Outa Hand" has been fully remastered, repackaged (with involvement from the band) and features 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks from the original sessions. And let me tell you that these bonus are great songs - even the demo 'Fly On', in its rough mix, is a great addition to the Coney Hatch legacy. The other two bonus tracks are sung by Carl Dixon ('Nobody Gives You'), and by Andy Curran ('Your Kinda Love').The sound of this remastered version is clear and powerful at the same time, and it also includes a 16-page colour booklet with rare photos and with very interesting comments behind the "Outa Hand" sessions provided by Carl and Andy.

Line Up:

Carl Dixon – rhythm guitar, lead vocals
Andy Curran – bass, lead vocals
Steve Shelski – lead guitar, vocals
Dave "Thumper" Ketchum – drums, percussion

01. Don't Say Make Me
02. Shake It
03. First Time For Everything
04. Some Like It Hot
05. To Feel The Feeling Again

07. Love Games
08. Fallen Angel
09. Music Of The Night
10. Nobody Gives You (Bonus Track)
11. Your Kinda Love (Bonus Track)

Album:

Oh yeah, "Friction", by CONEY HATCH is one of the hidden Melodic Rock / AOR gems from the middle '80s now wonderfully digitally remastered from the original tapes by Rock Candy Records.Coney Hatch is mostly known for their early hard rock albums, but "Friction" is a Melodic Rock diamond that deserves a prominent place in your collection. The Toronto based 4 piece Coney Hatch were one of Canada’s Rock brightest hopes during the mid-Eighties. They impressed fans and critics alike with their rambunctious brand of hard rock and melody, a sound imbued with a certain, some might say typically Canadian, quirkiness. Catchy, for sure, but also containing twists and turns that suggested the band had been students of a number of hard rockin’ maple leaf acts from April Wine to the riff hungry swagger of Triumph and all points in between. "Friction" was Coney Hatch’s third and, as it turned out, their final album. It was a record designed to infiltrate the mass market, with catchy hooks and a selection of punishing riffs with a commercial 'Americanized' feel. Issued in 1985 and crafted by renowned British producer Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T, Lynch Mob) the record was received with great critical enthusiasm, but hit a brick wall at their record company. With Def Leppard and Bon Jovi receiving major promotional pushes, Coney Hatch were sidelined and left, without the financial budget, to fight their own corner. It was a crushing disappointment leaving the band in a state of confusion and, ultimately, unable to carry on. Their legacy, however, continues to grow, with many citing "Friction" as their finest and, possibly, one of the best Melodic (Hard) Rock albums released that year. Revisit the likes of ‘This Ain’t Love’, the awesome ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Burning Love’ for proof positive that this record delivered on all fronts. For years, Coney Hatch's "Friction" was almost impossible to find on CD, and shouted for a proper remastering. The Rock Candy treatment from the original master tapes is really good, as the album was originally recorded at different sessions and there was a slightly difference between some tracks mastering. Now, perfectly balanced, properly remastered and with the bonus track "Fuel For The Fire" (B-side), this Rock Candy reissue finally does justice to this great mid-80s Melodic Rock album.

Album:

Toronto's own outta hand hard rockers and freaks of friction CONEY HATCH are alive and well, and still holding on to their not yet faded glory. Keep an eye out for their love games, because these operators are still swinging around monkey bars. They were quite popular in the early 80's while living the fantasy, even though they are named after The London Coney Hatch Lunatic Asylum. Thankfully, these revived rockers have re-united with the classic line-up set to stand up strong and shake it loose.Following the near fatal car accident in 2008 that nearly killed Carl Dixon, the band is refueled and have the fire to regain a strong following now that they are signed with Frontiers. They have worked with Kim Mitchell and Max Norman in the past, and they had a number of radio friendly hits. Carl also went on to play with APRIL WINE and THE GUESS WHO whiles other members pursued successful solo careers.I will never forget in 1985 hearing BUSTER BROWN cover the song “Monkey Bars” which is still a cool cut to play today. I know that the first two CONEY HATCH releases have been re-mastered, but the only CD I have ever had is the compilation: “Best Of Three” with material from their first three albums. In order to get a sense of what they sound like think ALDO NOVA, AXE (FLORIDA), '80s era APRIL WINE, HELIX, KICK AXE, etc. The new material on “Four” allows for a few updated elements, but still maintains that classic '80s Hard Rock flavor. The Y&T “Open Fire” effect of “Blown Away” makes you want to feel that feeling again with its punchy anthem, and pounding drum beat. I am pretty sure that Carl is doing all the singing this time, even though in the past Andy also served as lead vocalist on a number of hits like “Some Like It Hot” or “Wrong Side Of Town”. “Boys Club” has a great vibe to it as does “Down & Dirty”, you can almost feel the sleaze, but not be blinded by the glam. “The Devil U Know” has a strong message to it, and exhibits a mature level of songwriting.“Marseilles” is pure fun and homage to the locale, replete with a French toast to the town. “Keep Driving” has a MOODY BLUES “Asleep At The Wheel” meets B.O.C. “Dancin' In The Ruins” motif. Overall, CONEY HATCH is still connected to their original fan base, but they are not averse to trying new things too, which accounts for the funky vibe, and some more modern elements in favor of acts like NICKELBACK, DISTURBED, MY DARKEST DAYS, DAUGHTRY, etc. This is where I draw the line, as I prefer their original style and when they write songs in the vein of “Devil's Deck” is when I am most pleased. Believe me, all of us, we want more of the older style.I get no sleep tonight until I finish this review, so pay attention. It is high time to get to know these victims of rock who still make great music in the night, and I look forward to watching them do it again.

Album:

Canadian rockers Coney Hatch have released a track from their forthcoming live album Postcard From Germany. The album will be out early next year. (See previous post for further details.) The live cut now available is the classic “Devil’s Deck”, which opened the band’s 1982 debut album. The song is one of the album’s best known tracks, along with “Monkey Bars” and “Hey Operator”, and is always a highlight of the band’s live show. The track is available to stream and the album can be pre-ordered digitally – https://found.ee/ConeyHatchPFG (and see Youtube below) *As previously noted the band will be playing the entire debut album at the El Mocambo on December 29. May be tix still left, see the press release below…The El Mocambo in Toronto is undoubtedly one of the most instantly recognizable names when it comes to music venues. After all, such iconic artists as the Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, the Cars, and Stevie Ray Vaughan have all performed at the legendary hall over the years (and also issued recordings from their performances there). And on Thursday, December 29, 2022, Canadian hard rockers Coney Hatch will headline the venue – to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their gold-certified self-titled debut.VIP tickets will include entry to the venue early to witness part of the soundcheck, plus a meet & greet with all four members and a photo with the band. The band will also autograph one item per person. The El Mocambo performance will be a homecoming of sorts for the band (lead vocalist/guitarist Carl Dixon, guitarist Sean Kelly, bass player/vocalist Andy Curran, and drummer Dave Ketchum), as they previously played the venue in 1983, and hail from Toronto. To mark this special occasion, the band will be performing the debut album in its entirety that evening (a recording that spawned such hard rock gems as “Monkey Bars,” “Devil’s Deck,” and “Hey Operator”). This is Hatch’s only Canadian show before they start a UK tour in January 2023 (opening a string of dates for Steve Harris’ British Lion). The show will also include additional songs from their extensive catalog.“The El Mocambo is a venue that has been near and dear to our hearts,” says Curran. “All of the Coney’s loved performing there and we all saw so many amazing bands and artists perform there, as well. It’s so rich in history and the logical place for us to perform our debut record for the 40th anniversary for our hometown Toronto fans.”Also, arriving soon from the Hatch will be a live album, ‘Postcard from Germany.’ “We’re very excited and grateful that after all these years, we’re still getting along and releasing new songs. We’re a brotherhood and this new live record totally captures the spirit of Coney Hatch live. In your face double guitar attack! Also two spankin’ new songs to boot! That’s a pretty cool thing for our fans.”
