Bio:

Brighton Rock are a Canadian hard rock band who released three albums in their home country during the 1980s and 1990s. They broke up in 1991 before reuniting and releasing a live album in 2002.Formed in Niagara Falls by guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs in 1982, the band also included vocalist Gerry McGhee, keyboardist Martin Victor and drummer Mark Cavarzan. After their song "Barricade" was selected for CILQ's Q107 Homegrown album in 1984, they independently released a self-titled EP the following year. They subsequently signed to WEA for their full-length debut, Young, Wild and Free, in 1986, adding Johnny Rogers on keyboards replacing Martin Victor. That album spawned the Canadian hit singles "We Came to Rock" and "Can't Wait for the Night". The band followed up with Take a Deep Breath in 1988 which sold 70,000 copies in Canada. While writing for 1991's Love Machine, Rogers left the band. Gerry McGhee stated, "We didn't really feel that keyboards were part of us anymore. There's really no place for them in our musical direction now." Rogers was replaced for touring purposes by a second guitar player, Greg Bioleau, who previously played with McGhee in his first band, The Rockers. The band broke up after the tour to support Love Machine. In 1992, guitarist Greg Fraser joined Helix, replacing Paul Hackman. Fraser remained with Helix for four years. Also in 1992, McGhee auditioned for Mötley Crüe who were replacing their departed singer, Vince Neil. The band regrouped for a reunion tour in 2001, releasing the live album A Room for Five Live in 2002. In 2006 a greatest hits package was released titled The Essentials. In January 2007, Fraser and Skreebs formed a new project known as Fraze Gang. The album Jackhammer came out in early 2008.An EP called Don't Call Us was released in late 2009.The band regrouped again Thursday October 30, 2008 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto for a benefit concert for fellow Canadian rocker Carl Dixon who was injured in a car crash. In late Jan 2012 it was confirmed that the band would perform at the Firefest Festival in Nottingham, England in October 2012.On Saturday October 13, 2012 the band regrouped again for a sold-out show at The Rockpile in Toronto and announced that they would be coming back to The Rockpile in April 2013.On August 1, 2013 the band released the single and video for "Creatures of the Night".[citation needed] The song, a re-imagining of the KISS classic, appears on the charity album "A World With Heroes". The video was directed by Vancouver filmmaker Brian Sword.

Another '80s little gem screaming for a proper remaster was without a doubt "Young, Wild And Free", the full length debut by Canadian rockers BRIGHTON ROCK. I said was, because the band just released "Young, Wild And Free 30th Anniversary", remastered by no-other than talented Harry Hess, frontman of Harem Scarem.Brighton Rock are still alive & kickin' 2016 with all the original line-up intact rocking Canadian venues. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of "Young, Wild And Free" original release, this celebrated album finally see its reissue with a fresh remastering.Frontman Gerry McGhee said; "Just listened to the remastered version of Young, Wild And Free; it sounds like it was meant to be. Special thanks to Harry Hess (Harem Scarem) for his awesome job."After a promising indie EP, Brighton Rock got a contract with major label WEA and recorded "Young, Wild And Free" in 1986. Unlike most the high quality bands active in Canada at the time (Honeymoon Suite, Triumph, Loverboy for example) which delivered stylized melodic rock, Brighton Rock played fairly straightforward Hollywood-style hair metal / hard rock. However, their style has more in common with acts such as early Cinderella / Britny Fox than the pop-metal.The selling feature of Brighton Rock for me was the incredible voice of Gerry McGhee. Back in 1986, I’d never heard screaming like this before! At least not from a Canuck act. But it’s not gratuitous; McGhee throws-in screams strategically at key points, always in control, to blow you to the wall. Not that McGhee is the only talent in Brighton Rock. Also notable is guitarist Greg Fraser, who ended up in Helix in 1993, and today fronts the Frase Gang with Brighton Rock bassist Stevie Skreebs. And then you have the songs... 10 killer hard rock tunes with quite elaborated passages, not just verses / chorus / solo. Opener is the title track 'Young, Wild And Free', a rocker full of fire and it's the perfect teenage anthem.'We Came To Rock' is edgy and heavy with all the Eighties magic, same with 'Assault Attack', which as the title implies is a combat zone of hooky guitars and thunderous toms. 'Barricade' also rock hard, and has a really cool and tricky sounding guitar solo by Greg Fraser. 'Can't Wait For The Night' is a superb semi-ballad and a highlight, as well as 'Change of Heart', the more melodic hard rock oriented track on the album.Songs like 'Nobody's Hero' and the haunting nature of 'Jack Is Back' are where Brighton Rock delivers the more elaborated passages mentioned above, original arrangements with the keyboard work accentuating the melody. 'Rock 'n' Roll Kid' ends the album in fine rocking attack plenty of bite with an anthemic format. On "Young, Wild And Free" the outstanding songwriting makes this work stand out head-and-shoulders above many of its contemporary offerings. The chord changes and writing are simply visionary. Songs simple enough to be considered hair metal, yet stunning in their melodic arrangement and execution. Chord changes are smartly written, not just I-IV-VI-V standard block changes so common in today's insipid, repetitive offerings, but actual 7th chord variations off the tonic, beautiful melodic music to your ears.Despite of being produced by renowned Michael Wagener, "Young, Wild And Free" never sounded good, on vinyl LP nor CD. I think the problem, mostly, was the mix.Now with the expertise hands of Harry Hess behind the desk all feels much, much better with the instrumentation finding room to breathe.Brighton Rock's music still remains pretty unknown by many, and this really good remastered reissue gives the chance to discover this terrific band / album in all its potential.

Album:

The great albums by Canadian melodic hard rockers BRIGHTON ROCK have been out of print for many years, but now the band made them available again! On the blog we presented their first here, now it's time for the killer "Love Machine", in this 2016 reissue including a previously unreleased track.Brighton Rock are still alive & kickin' 2016 with all the original line-up intact rocking Canadian venues and fans raving for the band's celebrated albums to be reissued. After a promising indie EP, Brighton Rock got a contract with major label WEA and recorded 'Young, Wild And Free' in 1986. Unlike most the high quality bands active in Canada at the time (Honeymoon Suite, Triumph, Loverboy for example) which delivered stylized melodic rock, Brighton Rock played fairly straightforward Hollywood-style hair metal / hard rock. However, their style has more in common with acts such as early Cinderella, Britny Fox or early Van Halen than the pop-metal flair. And this is clear more than ever on "Love Machine", a pure hard rock affair.According to vocalist Gerry McGhee this was the record the band really wanted to make. They wanted to move in the same vein as Tesla, Kix, Ozzy Osbourne, etc instead of the typical Canadian rock band of the era. So "Love Machine" was a return to the true ballsy intended sound of Brighton Rock.Almost all the tracks here contain a great hook and a catchy chorus,, with the punchy 'Heart of Steel' and 'Mr. Mistreater' being really hard rockin', of 'Bulletproof' plenty of attitude. The title tracks rocks driven by an unrelentingly riff, and the anthemic ''Love In A Bottle'' (a favorite) it's full of terrific, huge gang-like backing vocals all over. There's no place for ballads here, but 'Still The One' provides variation with its cool midtempo pace, then the band does a superb take on the classic 'Cocaine' (made famous by Eric Clapton) arranged with a hard rock groove."Love Machine" was the last Brighton Rock album from the golden era as the next year split when the musical climate changed. But what a darn fine way to say goodbye. The guitars bite, the rhythm section it's an oiled machine and the vocals are arranged and performed with tons of fire. This reissue is not remastered but the transfer from the original tapes is excellent, million miles away from the original CD version. With the new transferring technology everything sound punchy and full.Additionally, we have as bonus a previously unreleased track called 'Gang Bang' removed from the original release by Brighton Rock's label Warner Canada for lyrical content (even though the same label released Get The Fuck Out by Skid Row at the same time). It's a kick ass, dirty hard rock tune with all the magic from the era.A HIGHLY Recommended piece of pure late '80s / early '90s Hard Rock.
