One weekend in 2003, in Oslo, Norway, a bunch of goons became bored with the selection of party music that was available to them, and, helped along by the consumption of large quantities of alcohol, the soon-to-be members of TrollfesT decided to take matters into their own hands. One website and six songs later, a German label, which at the time was called Solistium, recognised the potential in the madness and got in touch. With the immortal words “what the heck, let’s give it a go” TrollfesT agreed to a deal and started writing new material. By 2005 “Willkommen Folk tell Drekka Fest!!” hit the streets. And life as we know it was never the same again.Containing a selection of sounds and comments, many of which you would not necessary come across if you only frequented polite parties, “Willkommen…” displayed some unique qualities that caught people’s attention and consequently sold rather a lot of copies, so a deal for a second album was signed and in 2006 the story of Brakebein the Troll was released. “Brakebein” (not a bad choice for a title really given its subject matter), appeared in two versions - one that included a cartoon illustrating Brakebein’s voyage, and the other that included the lyrics.During the first years, TrollfesT never actually played live, but nevertheless the two albums succeeded in making the band a sought after addition to festivals, and the first foray beyond the planning stage occurred in 2007 as one of the headlining bands at the Ninth Barther Metal Open Air Festival. TrollfesT then went on to headline and play various festivals and concerts around Europe during 2007/08 including the Ragnarök and Riedfest festivals.January 2009 saw the release of TrollfesT’s third studio album “Villanden”. A much-anticipated underground album according to feedback from the fans, “Villanden” was quickly acknowledged as one of the craziest albums to have been released in a very long time, mixing, as it did, European Balkan music with extreme metal, and spread rapidly through the viral networks like YouTube, MySpace and Facebook. So how would anyone, in their right mind, or otherwise, dare to define TrollfesT? The closest you would come is probably True Norwegian Balkan Black Metal, but even then you would need to include influences from lots more genres. The best way to put it is that this band is all about alcohol, joy and music, three subjects that draw in fans from all ages and genres, eager to listen to TrollfesT’s records and witness the exuberant and skilled live performances.

Album:

Today I have the immense pleasure to review the new album from TROLLFEST called “Helluva” - and it is one “Helluva” fun one to do. Since their debut in 2003, TROLLFEST have been entertaining crowds of Heavy Metal fans with their unique style and language. This new opus is no different. With their true Balkan Norwegian Metal they will once again leave you breathless.I’ll say it right away, I hard time reviewing any lyrics from TROLLFEST. As usual, they sang the whole album in their own language called “Trollspråk”; nevertheless, it is easy to figure out that they aren’t talking about politics and finance. The album opens with “This Is Just The Intro”, which probably one of the funniest non-lyric videos I’ve ever seen. Only TROLLFEST could pull off taking an intro song with great music and turning it into the funniest thing you’ll watch all week. It moves flawlessly on to “Professor Otto”, which has a catchy hook and a great drum and bass melody that slows down the song at various points. This song had me singing along a few times. I can absolutely see this track becoming a crowd favorite. The whole album feels like an adventure with the trolls through various underground caves. With the “Spelunking Sisters” and “Gigantic Cave” in front of the lot, we’re going down into the depths of the earth. Again, with some massively addictive hooks and melodic riffs, they will have you singing along to their madness.“Steel Sarah” was the first official video released for this album, and it is probably the most polished song of them all. With so many folk instruments in the background, I can hardly differentiate them all. The pace of the song is perfect, as is the mix of choral and harsh vocals. As a bonus, it looks fun to play on stage; there is a lot of energy coming out of this song.“Hen of Hades” is a crazy one. The band indeed decided to include crazy chicken sounds on this album, and thus how better to introduce this than with Hen of Hades, the god of hell. Although it sounds weird at first, the song is pure genius, with trumpets and more folk instruments in the background it makes for one epic chicken. After a few slower songs like “Fräulein Helluva” and “Kabaret” we get to the “La Grande Finale” -the French way of saying “The big final”. The adventure is coming to an end in this energetic and melodic song. The drums are going wild while Trollmannen, the chorus and an unknown lady, guides us to the end of the journey. With the energy of Trollmannen and the melody of all the instruments together, this new album from TROLLFEST is sure to make its mark in their history. As a long time fan of this band I am pleased to hear such a beautifully crafted album. Everyone was focusing on bringing the story to life through their music and it totally worked.
