Album:

The Old Slavic priest from Náměšt' nad Oslavou has had his second ceremony. Those who were enchanted by his "Zhertva" may have to spend more time over his "Memoirs" before they can absorb them (that's my own experience talking), but the effort is worth it. Even on his second album, Žrec offers an interesting collection of songs, over which you can explore the question of where the boundaries of folk actually end, where the boundaries of metal begin, how far one can go in combining these strands of music, and how many faces the engagement of folk and metal can offer.Observation number one - the Frogs are more complicated. The very fact that there are six items on the record, while the record itself exceeds three-quarters of an hour, suggests that Žrec enjoy (they have already demonstrated these tastes in the last round and "Raráš Rakáša", as the longest item of the previous record, was the highest for me, however, in the current round they went even further) in extensive and narrative compositions. Since the plot of each individual track is quite rich, I guarantee that you will definitely not get bored (after the necessary absorption of the album). Perhaps only the extensive instrumental passage in "Wind in the Fields", at times flirting perhaps with the thoughtfulness of progressive metal (in "Death and Frost", on the other hand, Žrec do not hesitate to stray into thrash metal), is quite difficult for me to fit into the concept of the album. The second lesson - Žrec can continue to rely on excellent vocal games. Fans of the vocal orgies of certain Faroe Island colleagues may not entirely agree with me, but that's because Žrec's delivery is much more raw, earthy and pagan. Still, for the symbiosis of contrasting solo voices (of which the clear and delicate one in particular is very appealing in its apparent vulnerability), the perfection of the layered interweaving and the impressiveness of the dignified choruses, Žrec deserves a discharge.Lesson three - folk songs are a wonderful weapon! The flute, fujara and especially the dominating fiddle of newcomer Marvin are refreshing to the max, the earthiness of the songs (enhanced by the metallic elements) and the lyricism of the lyrics, partly inspired by the work of poet Miloslav Bures, have a very captivating charm. The fourth note - Žrec do not play first-rate hits, yet slogans such as "come back to misery" or "zimo, zimo" will not easily disappear from your mind. Although the record is perfectly coherent, in no song do the Žrec put you to sleep by focusing too intensely on a particular motif; they continuously change tempos, moods, deployment and vocal chords, and so in practically every song you will find both catchy motifs - personally, the wild one wins for me, perversely harsh paganism in "1066", the poetically delicate narrative of "Wind in the Fields" and the dignifiedly epic understatement of the title track "Memoirs" - as well as passages that are difficult to absorb, sometimes even cacophonous.Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. That's what you can bet on with Pagan Reapers 100%. Compared to the debut album, it took longer (mainly because of the persistent changeability, where the moment you've been drawn in by one of the motifs, Žrec usually mercilessly abandon it) for the magic of the ceremony to rise to the surface, but in the finale it's even a bit more intense than last time.
