Bio:

Carach Angren is a symphonic black metal band from the Netherlands, formed by two members of the now-defunct bands Inger Indolia and Vaultage. They have three steady members with previously frequent guest appearances for the violin parts. Their style is characterized by prominent use of orchestral arrangements. All of their studio albums are concept albums with lyrics based on ghost stories and folk lore, such as Flying Dutchman. They set themselves apart from other symphonic black metal artists in showcasing songs often using multiple languages apart from English, such as French, German and Dutch, though every song does use English as a baseline and certain choruses or sections will make the transition. The name means "Iron Jaws" in the Elvish language of Sindarin, and is the name of a fortified pass into North-Western Mordor in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.Carach Angren was formed in 2003 in the Dutch municipality of Landgraaf, after two members of Vaultage and Inger Indolia started a side project, due to their shared love of both legends and black metal. It seemed to go well, so Vaultage stepped down and Carach Angren "was ready for bigger steps".Their first EP was The Chase Vault Tragedy, which is a concept album about the Chase Vault Mystery that tells of coffins that mysteriously moved. Following this, they released a second EP, Ethereal Veiled Existence, covering the story of the Brown Lady at which point they were picked up by Maddening Media in 2007. It was then that Carach Angren recorded their first full-length album, Lammendam, which received positive international reviews.Their second album, Death Came Through a Phantom Ship, was released on February 26, 2010. They participated in the A Declaration of Hate European tour in support of the album, with extreme metal bands Dark Funeral, Zonaria and Nefarium. On 18 May 2012, their third studio album, Where the Corpses Sink Forever, was released. On 10 October 2014, a new track from their new album was released - "There's No Place Like Home".On 17 February 2015, This Is No Fairytale was available for streaming on Metal Hammer

Album:

Death Came Through a Phantom Ship is the second studio album by the Dutch symphonic black metal band Carach Angren, It was released in 2010.This album tells the legend of a ghost ship (an interpretation of the Flying Dutchman from its beginnings. While a wide variety of interpretations of the Flying Dutchman legend exist, the band says that the album is based on the Dutch interpretation of the story. However, they took some creative liberties with it to make it a more horrifying story. The album starts in the future, when a boat with an electronic communication device sails to the sea. The boat picks up signs of an eerie voice cursing its captain's name through the radio. Then a ghost ship comes across the sea. The sailors then remember stories about how people who saw that ship died in horrible ways. In track No. 3, in the same day of the sighting, later that night, the captain is haunted by the ghost of the seas. He kills his wife and daughter while sleepwalking and then kills himself with a shotgun. After that, it begins telling the story of Van der Decken and how he became the captain of an evil ship.

Album:

A non-conforming cautionary tale doused in impassioned symphonic song-writing arranged delicately to accentuate the theatrical, thunderous vocal narrative that delivers a script penned with an imprudent B grade bluntness.Aptly titled, This Is No Fairy Tale has a simple plot but the concept can easily be misconstrued. This is no fairy tale because this is a non-conforming cautionary tale, which undeniably comes across as a bastardized version of Hansel and Gretel popularized by Brothers Grimm in the early 19th century. Such a tale uses folklore to convey a warning to the listener by making an unpleasant example out of the protagonist(s). Here, they would be the kids (Hansel and Gretel). The caution: There is no nightmare besides the one of reality and it doesn't matter if you're innocent; so brace yourselves, children.Carach Angren have outdone themselves at song-writing: Little in terms of pushing the skill envelope and more so in striking a solid balance between writing coherent, engaging songs and a BGM-like passive approach to underscore the storyline. The latter elements sees them continuing their trademark melodramatic indulgence to spotlight the climaxes barring few underdone moments. The track "Dreaming Of A Nightmare In Eden" is a direct, sinister take on Hansel and Gretel, with stellar vocal delivery. The guitar-works on the record are no step up from their previous effort Where The Corpses Sink Forever. However, the track "Possessed By A Craft Of Witchery" stands out for it's intricate riffing with progressive tendencies. While there is a distinct black metal sound production-wise, the overall tone is ambiguous for they often charge with an Septic Flesh-like death attack.Lyrically, as hinted, they're not trying to charm you with poetic genius. There is no subtlety. This This shouldn't be surprising given the fairy tale themed context. However there are awkward phrasings such as - 'successful suicide', 'a damn small chance to escape' , 'the witch's voice now whispers and laughs' - which can be off-putting to certain listeners. That said, they do manage to paint the story to detail quite gracefully with lines like 'Her ghost slithers like black fog down the chimney at night'. They don't loose all the points.Overall, with This Is No Fairy Tale, Carach Angren have not raised the bar for themselves but have laterally released yet another consistent record with excellent musicianship to back an ambitious theme. This release, reinforces their place among the most creative and forward thinking artists associated with black metal right now.

Album:

Like a cold wind rustling leaves across a graveyard, Dance And Laugh Amongst The Rotten (Season of Mist) creeps in with an unsettling piano intro. Distant screeching of strings echo as the lights fades, voices erupting from the darkness. “Charlie” then jumps into sporadic blast beats and murky growls. The vocals cry out a tale of a haunting and invading presence, the guitar and drums shredding and blasting in spurts. The track drops to diabolical depths of terror with deeper guitar tones. The feeling of intrusion comes closer as children’s voices call out “Charlie”.So begins Carach Angren’s Dance And Laugh Amongst The Rotten. Once again tapping into the realm of concepts, the album centers around a young girl’s unhealthy obsession with a Ouja board. The fifth studio release from the symphonic black metal trio, the record excels with the band’s best production. While the orchestration and keyboard components have always pumped with ferocious energy, the guitar and drums jump out with a sharp aggression. There’s more of a speed to this material than in past works, while still containing plenty of those slow drawing moments of chilling dread. There’s a terrific blend of tearing metal energy, that meets terrifying theatrics and aura.In regards to this balance, one of the best examples on the album is “Blood Queen”. Together, the drumming and guitar take off as delicate strings play in the background. This flow flies away up until the halfway point, where all the instrumentals drop out but piano and strings. In this eerie air, the lyrics speak of terrifying imagery. The album is rife with horror themed lyricism that balances both brutality and feelings of unease. One example from “Blood Queen” is, “And the mirror shows her a newborn child/ She reaches for the infant, so sweet/ but the mirror cracks/ its eyes start to bleed.”“In De Naam Van De Duivel” opens on searing blast beats and thick guitar chugs. The song plays with chemistry, backing off the speed for eased moments of rhythm, just to throw in some choppy progression. This includes moments of drums with piano, to moments of that straight forward rhythm, back to a crushing darkness of riffs. Amongst all the tracks, “Pitch Black Box” is by far one of the most rip roaring titles amongst them. It’s also a super fucking catchy song, with its triumphant pounding intro. Subtle drum work takes a backseat to vibrant electric riffs, and adrenaline inducing string work. Other than the subtle moments of strings that play with the vocals, the track blasts with this momentum, trudging forward like a march into the underworld. “Three Times Thunder Strikes” is a ripping good time that introduces some of the fastest playing on the record. Punishing drums are backed by ghostly cries as the guitar shreds away. The song then shifts into chaos as the instruments pick up, and the strings shriek in the background.Dance And Laugh Amongst The Rotten is an excellent combination of theatrical horror that meets brutal metal. Carach Angren have sincerely outdone themselves on this captivating delivery of horrifying auras and relentless mayhem. The music presents itself with an otherworldly and unsettling nature, with each new track keeping things fresh. With the best production the band has had to date, the guys in Carach Angren prove their mastery in symphonic instrumentation. Aggressive guitar work that meets blistering drums, backed by a haunting set of orchestral instruments and creepy vocals, make for one of the best horror fueled records of recent times.
