Bio:

The New York Black Metal act have been blowing minds and eardrums since forming in 2007, but Black Anvil's third full- length, aptly titled Hail Death is their most epic and fully realized album to date.NYC’s BLACK ANVIL let loose ‘Triumvirate’, the follow-up to 2009’s acclaimed ‘Time Insults the Mind’, on the unsuspecting world. ‘Triumvirate’s assault is powerful, primal, and pure; capturing and channeling the spirit of metal’s earliest trailblazers through a 21st century urban hostility. Insidious tracks such as “The Evil of All Roots”, “Scalping”, and “Dead and Left” are as cold and hard as they are hypnotic. ‘Triumvirate’ unquestionably leaves BLACK ANVIL’s enduring, pitch-black mark on the metal world.

Album:

Discussing whether or not music rings trve, kvlt or hipster seems to dominate conversations within the circles of metal dorkdom, and absolutely no one has an answer. You can’t speak to true black metal unless you have burned down a church or maybe stabbed your guitarist, so until then, we can skip that part of the discussion when it comes to Black Anvil. They get a ton of shit thrown at them for the ways they mix up certain portions of the genre with their past hardcore influences, but in the end they have produced some of the most forward leaning extreme music in the last few years.Admittedly I am not one to judge the merits of their black metal purity, but when Time Insults the Mind came across my ears I was hooked on this band. Taking some of the best parts of thrash, hardcore and most definitely black metal, Black Anvil carved a niche into a world of metal that has no more room for genre splitting. We are growing past the point of classification, and so much of that has to do with bands like this that aggressively do what they do and don’t outwardly care what people think. This worked to their advantage in the past, and this time around with Hail Death, coming four years after their last album, Black Anvil grew into a beast that will not be slayed. This record is expansive, incorporating the things that made fans fall in love with them, but providing a three dimensional diorama of sound that is both simple, but has depth of feel with its gang vocals, tremolo picking and a mixture of tempos regulated by intense drumming, blast beat, d-beat… it hits a little bit of everything. Some would consider this a hodgepodge of styles that are symptomatic of a band that can’t seem to find their feet, yet it listens like the most cohesive thing Black Anvil ever accomplished. Where these pieces were just that – parts assembled in an interesting way – Hail Death musically unites all the concepts they have worked on their entire lives. Moments of slow deliberate heavy riffs open songs up into speedy jams with reserved interludes that give pause before ripping your face off.I would suggest you listen to this whole album, however, don’t just hit one or two on the interwebs. I noticed that taking songs individually doesn’t do the flow of the record justice, they feel like pieces of a whole, they stand alone in their own respect, but putting them in the context of the surrounding seems to play off of each of other in a way that creates a mood, an ebb and flow of riffage, slow and grinding, fast paced and ruthless, one of the best records of the year.

Bio:

Formed in 2007 in New York City, Black Metal troupe BLACK ANVIL released their debut album Time Insults the Mind on Monumentum/Reflections Records in September 2009, and later that year signed to renowned independent label Relapse Records. After a re-release of their acclaimed 2009 debut, BLACK ANVIL unleashed their first proper full-length Triumvirate in September 2010. Recorded with engineer ‘General’ George Fullan (The Rolling Stones, Dream Theater) at Mark ‘The Animal’ Mendoza’s (Twisted Sister) Diamond Drop Studio on Long Island, NY, Triumvirate received critical acclaim and was hailed as an "all-around monster metal album". Pitchfork even stated, “Black Anvil’s an amazing live band… and their songwriting’s as strong as their stage presence.”Triumvirate was followed in 2014 by Hail Death, a 70-minute journey of intensity that further established BLACK ANVIL as a modern Black Metal powerhouse and was praised by publications including Noisey, Pitchfork, Stereogum, MetalSucks, and many more. Constantly bringing their live ritual to the masses, BLACK ANVIL have participated in numerous high profile tours with Black Metal legends such as Mayhem, Watain, Inquisition, Urfaust and Marduk plus dates with Aura Noir, Nachtmystium, Immortal, Eyehategod, Cannibal Corpse and many others. Additionally, the band has appeared at various festivals including the Scion Rock Fest, Beyond The Gates in Bergen, Norway and the renowned Roadburn Festival in The Netherlands. Now, BLACK ANVIL return with As Was, the staggering 50-minute follow-up to 2014's Hail Death. Atmospheric and melodic without relenting on any of the ferocity BLACK ANVIL have always been known for, As Was seamlessly weaves through eight monumental passages of extreme metal art. More diverse, complex, and thought-provoking than anything they've done before, As Was is a stellar representation of modern Black Metal, and of BLACK ANVIL's continuous progression and songcraft. Featuring cover art by Metastazis (Behemoth, Watain, Morbid Angel) and recorded at Menegroth by Colin Marston (Krallice, Gorguts, Panopticon) with mixing and mastering done by Tore Stjerna at Necromorbus Studio (Tribulation, Funeral Mist, Watain).

Album:

When Black Anvil covered the obscure KISS ballad “Under the Rose” as a deluxe bonus track for their last album, 2014’s Hail Death, it drove home the point that no influence was off limits. Choosing that song—which hails from the one album where the otherwise hedonistic KISS tried their hand at a weighty concept—effectively worked as a declaration of Black Anvil’s contrarian streak. Moreover, rather than give “Under the Rose” a predictably harsh makeover, Black Anvil more or less opted to preserve its original form, which alternates between delicate acoustic guitar-driven verses and a chorus that weds chunky hard-rock guitar with moody grandeur. On paper, it was a splashy move. But the truth is that the KISS cover fits right in with the rest of Hail Death, which captures the New York black metal outfit taking risks right from the opening note. At that stage, after two albums of full-on heaviness, Black Anvil were starting to infuse their blackened thrash with influences that, by comparison, fall close to pedestrian ’80s hair metal. Somehow, though, they made all the elements on Hail Death fit together—which isn’t quite as surprising when you consider that, as New York hardcore veterans, Black Anvil hold Twisted Sister in the same esteem as Bad Brains and the Cro-Mags.On their new album As Was, Black Anvil remain as willing as ever to stretch, but it takes more patience to see their range this time. The eight-minute opening number “On Forgotten Ways” contains plenty of twists and turns, but other than some melodic vocals, it doesn't introduce any new expressions to the band's palette. When you compare those clean vocals to similar phrasing by say, Charlie Looker of Psalm Zero, Black Anvil sound like they’re running with a pack rather than striking out on their own. And when frontman/bassist Paul Delaney screeches, he hits so close to Carcass frontman Jeff Walker you have to wonder if Delaney is doing an homage. It isn’t until the third and title track that the album suddenly opens up. Where many black metal acts overplay their hand when it comes to mood, resulting in exaggerated, even comical, attempts at drama, Black Anvil make a genuine appeal to the emotions as the title track ebbs and flows, its heavy buildups placed ever-so-carefully in relation to serene sections where acoustic guitars function as so much more than just unplugged electrics. Songs like this usually expose bands as trying too hard, but “As Was” unfolds with effortless grace.Going even further on “Nothing,” Black Anvil follow a smoky keyboard section worthy of Yes artist Roger Dean with a highway-bound rook groove reminiscent of shredding icon Joe Satriani’s “Summer Song.” The band even channels its inner David Lynch with the eerie twang that introduces “Two Keys: Here’s the Lock.” Such moves might carry a whiff of ironic perversion if they didn't blend in so well. Like Celtic Frost before them, Black Anvil conjure a profound darkness that isn't necessarily rooted in hatefulness or negativity. It’s been a long, long time since Satan became for black metal what cars and sex are to rock’n’roll, and Black Anvil don't even directly refer to the devil on As Was. Instead, they repeatedly address the presence of vaguely supernatural entities they refer to only as “he” and “she”—“She speaks to me/I can hear her faintly/She whispers, she screams/a name unspoken” Delaney sings on “May Her Wrath Be Just.”“On Forgotten Ways” refers to a “beast” that “writhes in agony/Beside me, within me/A part of me.” The lyrics never have to get overly specific to make it clear that Black Anvil are channeling real-life struggles. In that way, As Was aims far beyond the sophomoric black-metal fare that uses Satan as a way of saying “fuck you” to world. And while the interpretation is left to the listener, Black Anvil manage to be thoroughly convincing with As Was, an album whose lyrical opacity strengthens the versatility of the music, and vice-versa.
