Bio:

Accept is a German heavy metal band from the town of Solingen, originally assembled by former vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, guitarist Wolf Hoffmann and bassist Peter Baltes. Their beginnings can be traced back to the late 1960s. The band played an important role in the development of speed metal, being part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s.Following their disbandment in 1997 and short-lived reunion in 2005, Accept reunited again in 2009 with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo replacing Dirkschneider and released their two highest charting albums to date, Blood of the Nations and Stalingrad. They have sold over 17 million albums worldwide

Album:

ACCEPT are entering their seventeenth studio session, and this reviewer wonders whether Mark Tornillo, together with the band's spiritus rector, will one day reach the point where he feels like Brian Johnson, Andi Deris or Bruce Dickinson: as the new guy who has sung on most of the band's albums? That would be a valiant achievement, and it already is, because not too many people in this band have been granted six albums in a row. So the chemistry seems to be right, and as sceptical as I was about ACCEPT's fate when Wolf Hoffmann gradually parted ways with almost all of his former companions over the last few years, I have to admit that the new version has established itself and that it works despite all the line-up changes.Of course, there is no fundamental disagreement with those numerous critics who see an increasing schematisation of the works in the succession of the very strong Tornillo entry "Blood Of The Nations" and who complain that an ACCEPT album in the third millennium seems a bit like a professionally arranged work from the target group-oriented construction kit of success. But on the other hand, you can criticise many bands that have been on the road for decades for exactly the same thing. It's no different with AC/DC and JUDAS PRIEST, and their latest releases are widely celebrated as great late works. If we apply the same standards to ACCEPT and don't get confused by all the discussions about which faction is more worthy of carrying the torch, then "Humanoid" simply doesn't leave too much to be desired. The disc contains eleven new tracks that have been produced in a contemporary but not too loud or sterile manner and, with playing times of three and a half to five minutes, largely pass as typical Teutonic steel rockers, from solid stompers to up-tempo bangers. The wealth of variety is therefore largely manageable. Nevertheless, the band manages to keep the listener's attention level high throughout. This is ultimately due to the fact that a successful splash of colour is added here and there and that strong, echoing melodies are used throughout. The opener 'Diving Into Sin' starts with sitar-like sounds and develops into a hard neckbreaker with riffing reminiscent of pain-killing JUDAS PRIEST, while the following title track is more anthemic and dramatic, with the typical Teutonic steel choirs in the bridge. 'Frankenstein', on the other hand, is simply solid and plays successfully with melodic self-quotes, but another prime example of effective small effects with a strong impact is 'Man Up'. A simple, smooth, breathing rocker that exudes an American southern flair thanks to its very laid-back guitar playing with slide elements and simply rocks on in a cool way, making the five minutes fly by.With an increased tempo, which is nowhere near as fast as the shark, 'The Reckoning' serves far more metallic desires, but here too the chorus is just as unerring as the Hoffmann solos. Of course, these always have the neo-classical trademarks, but they are not as dominant as they were on "Metal Heart" or "Stalingrad". The rock'n'roll is also in the details, such as on the cool 'Nobody Gets Out Alive', and of course 'Ravages Of Time' is a melancholy, classic ballad that would have done just as well on the first two ACCEPT albums as on a mid-eighties SCORPIONS album. Sure, it's kind of predictable - just like the two hundredth metal song later on called 'Unbreakable' - but it's also really good. You can revel in the guitar solos just as much as in Tornillo's strong and emotional performance. In the final third, we then encounter further reminiscences of earlier ACCEPT phases, such as the marching dynamics of 'Mind Games', which would have fitted in very well with "Russian Roulette", or the boogie approach of 'Straight Up Jack', reminiscent of AC/DC and STATUS QUO, before 'Southside Of Hell', peppered with neoclassical guitar quotations, sends us off into the night. As you can see, there's little that can be criticised about "Humanoid" that couldn't be criticised about almost any band with a similarly extensive past. That's why it's easy for me to get involved with the songs here, because after all, Wolf Hoffmann and his boys really manage to ennoble almost every song with compelling hooks at all ends, and that's an absolutely remarkable achievement. If you like the previous albums of the Tornillo era, you can't go wrong with "Humanoid".
