This is a supergroup that went completely, or almost, unnoticed when it was around. BADD BOYZ is indeed one of those meteors that appeared in the Hard/Heavy landscape, only to disappear almost immediately after. This project was the fruit of an association between several musicians of the US Hard Rock scene at the time: singer Paul Shortino (ex-ROUGH CUTT, ex-QUIET RIOT), bassist Sean McNabb (whose CV, today, indicates that he made his weapons within QUIET RIOT, HOUSE OF LORDS, GREAT WHITE, XYZ, DOKKEN, Among others), guitarists Mitch Perry (who was once in KEEL and MSG) and Michael Guy (who briefly played in SHARK ISLAND) and drummer Rich Carlton (unknown to most). These are not flashy names, but what matters most is the content.The BADD BOYZ project started with several handicaps: first of all, it appeared at a time when US hard rock was no longer commercially successful, i.e. in 1993. Secondly, their album was released in a very confidential way since it was distributed on a small Japanese label called Alfa (has anyone ever heard of it?). And to top it all off, the name the band chose is not the most original, nor the coolest: indeed, it sounds cliché and can remind one of an obsolete glam band (2 years earlier, a minor band called WILD BOYZ had already been around) as well as of a gang of show-off rappers.
Paul Shortino (born May 14, 1953) is an American rock singer and musician who has sung for Rough Cutt/The Cutt, Quiet Riot, Bad Boyz, and Shortino.He briefly recorded with J.K. Northrup as the duo, Shortino/Northrup. He has also recorded as a solo artist, writing and performing the song "E.G.G.M.A.N." as the theme for Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2 for Sega,[4] and in Shadow the Hedgehog as "E.G.G.M.A.N. Doc Robeatnix Mix". Shortino recorded lead vocals for the Heavy Metal benefit project Hear 'n Aid in 1985. The single from this project, "Stars", also features lead vocals by heavy metal singers Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, Don Dokken, Kevin DuBrow, Eric Bloom and Dave Meniketti.Shortino is currently a member of the band King Kobra, and also performs in the cast of Raiding the Rock Vault at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

BADD BOYZ was the late ’80s project of Paul Shortino and bass player Sean McNabb formed when they leave Quiet Riot. The line up was completed by other talented musicians namely Mitch Perry (MSG, Talas, Steeler, Heaven), Michael Guy (Shark Island, House of Lords) and Rich Carlton.Managed by Wendy Dio, the band had a deal with Pasha Records, but Murphy’s Law prevailed and the band broke up. Eventually, an 8-track album sel-tilted ‘Badd Boyz’ appeared in 1993 only in Japan, a rarity now.Now Demon Doll Records is un-earthing this forgotten melodic hard rock little gem plenty of huge hooks, killer choruses, and gang backing vocals. Shortino sounds particularly good on this album, perhaps one of his best and unknown performances.The album not only has been remastered but additional songs were found – never before released – and alongside new artwork and re-titled “No, No, Nikkie” (as one of the ‘new’ tracks) this is one of the most welcomed releases this year.A majority of these songs were taped at Pasha Music House in Hollywood where Motley Crue recorded parts of their 4x platinum opus “Theatre Of Pain”. Most the tracks here were recorded 1989, others completed later by Shortino with different musicians. What was once thought to be the lost recordings of “No, No, Nikkie”, “All Of My Life” and “King Of Thieves”, features Kingdom Come and ex Scorpions drummer James Kottak behind the kit.There are some really good tunes on this album including “Leave It To The Law”, “No Time For Cryin” “Straight To My Heart”, or the previously unreleased catchy ”No, No, Nikkie” and the killer ”King Of Thieves”.This album has never been released in the United States and fetches a pretty penny on the secondary markets… ’till now. Re-titled, repackaged and remastered from the ground up, Paul and DDR are bringing this long lost rocking album back to the masses.Sound quality and production are top notch, and as said, Shortino is amazing into a perhaps his best recordings ever.
