Bio:

CUT UP was founded by drummer Tobias Gustafsson and vocalist/bassist Erik Rundqvist in early 2014. After disbanding Vomitory by the end of 2013 after 24 years of death metal duty, the two felt it obvious to continue creating death metal together. Very soon, guitarist Anders Bertilsson and guitarist/vocalist Andreas Björnson were recruited and CUT UP was complete. Both Bertilsson – who was previously and most notably in Coldworker (2006-2013) – and Björnson – also known from Fetus Stench – share the same musical ideals as Gustafsson and Rundqvist as well as the passion to play live. The following months were filled with hard work, writing and rehearsing, and in November 2014 they entered Big Balls Studios in Karlstad/Sweden and recorded 11 songs for the debut album, entitled "Forensic Nightmares". The album was mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström at Garageland Studios Umeå/Sweden. The whole band was involved in the songwriting process from the get-go, which makes "Forensic Nightmares" a solid band effort, and it's a clear indication to which direction CUT UP is heading. With the band members' collective resume and reputation in the metal scene, fans can expect nothing but violent, catchy, groovy and grinding death metal. Soon after the recording of the album was finished, CUT UP signed a worldwide multi-album deal with Metal Blade Records.

Album:

Twenty four years is a long time for any band to have lasted. When VOMITORY finally called it quits in 2013 though, vocalist/guitarist Erik Rundqvist and drummer Tobias Gustafsson clearly didn’t feel they’d quite finished yet. Picking up ex-live VOMITORY member and COLDWORKER guitarist Anders Bertilsson and vocalist/guitarist Andreas Björnson, best known for FETUS STENCH, along the way, they set back out to continue exactly where they left off.And continue they did. Fans of grinding death metal will have no complaints here. From the very first track CUT UP show their pedigree. The opener Enter Hell kicks off with solid riffs and the ever welcome blast beats you expect from a record like this while Burial Time is a shorter song with a brutal little solo and a change in the tempo to keep you guessing. Remember the Flesh is slower than the previous two tracks with a groovy riff and this gives the vocals a real chance to shine. A Butchery Improved continues this exhibition of skill with a crushing breakdown sure to be a solid feature of any live shows to come. Brain Cell Holocaust and Forensic Nightmare are a more traditional take on the same formula, with chugging riffs and no let-up in the pace, this record is taking no prisoners.Camouflesh continues this traditional sound, slowing only to allow the riff to shine through once again, leaving you in no doubt as to the experience and skill of the guitarists. In arguably the most well-crafted track of the album Order of the Chainsaw has everything you could ever want from a death metal song, with crushingly heavy riffs, vile changes in tempo and chorus that is roared out by both vocalists, the song perfectly sums up everything CUT UP are showing they can do, even going as far as to include the almost obligatory horror movie chainsaw sounds.Stab and Stab Again is another shorter song and wastes none of its time with anything but rapid blasting drumming and riffs to match. Bunker Z16 continues this, letting up only for the bass to make a brief appearance. The album closes with Dead and Impaled another of the more grinding tracks on offer here and an odd one to end on, leaving you feeling like they’ve not quite finished and there should be more to come. The production on this record is crushingly heavy, the lyrics deal with death and horror and the artwork is a colourful gory mess. The eleven tracks on offer here are all your traditional death metal offerings, no pomp or ceremony. CUT UP haven’t reinvented the wheel on Forensic Nightmare, instead sticking to what they know. Sometimes that’s exactly the right thing to do. This is one of those times.

Soon after the recording of the album was finished, CUT UP signed a worldwide multi-album deal with Metal Blade Records.

Album:

Though Cut Up are a relatively new band to the scene, having only formed in 2014, none of the quartet could be described as anything other than a veteran in the Swedish death metal scene. With frontman Erik Rundqvist (bass, vocals), guitarist Anders Bertilsson and drummer Tobias “Tobben” Gustafsson all having served time in legendary Swedish outfit Vomitory, and Gustafsson lending his sticks to Amon Amarth’s newest opus, ‘Jomsviking’, Cut Up know what they are doing. “Wherever They May Rot” is the Swedes’ second offering, following their Metal Blade Records debut “Forensic Nightmares,” released in 2015.Straight off the bat, everything about “Wherever They May Rot” is an improvement on “Forensic Nightmares.” Not that the debut was bad, as such, but in spite of a few killer moments of death metal, everything from the awful artwork to the generic songwriting left “Forensic Nightmares” as a disappointing album from a group of talented musicians. First, second, third and fortieth impressions of “Wherever They May Rot” prove things have gotten better, tighter, and heavier – even the artwork is leagues better than they debut, comparing the two is akin to comparing a Mark Riddick album cover to a high-school student’s notebook doodlings. That said, however, I would be surprised to see anyone claim this as one of 2017’s finest death metal offerings – good as it is, it is not perfect. The biggest problem “Wherever They May Rot” faces is a lack of memorability. The great moments– and by my beard, there are more than a few great moments– become buried and lost in a sea of blasting, down-tuned riffing and a general aura of sameness.Strength of Cut Up’s members is their ability to spit in the face of melody, opting for a far more grinding, unrelenting sound, and to still make it enticing. Although the open six minutes or so of the album fade into a wall of indecipherable brutality, “Behead The Dead” features a groovier, heavier passage around the halfway point that ends up leading to one of best tracks of the album by far, “Wherever They May Rot’s” title track. Though not even remotely doomy by anyone’s standards, “Wherever They May Rot” has a slower pace than we’ve experienced thus far in it’s namesake, lead by infectious riffs and catchy vocal-lines.This trend continues onto “Vermin Funeral,” which is equally groove-focused and one of “Wherever They May Rot’s” finer moments. “Into The Aftermath” further proves that Cut Up are at their strongest when they swap the formless brutality for a more refined, slightly groovier, and wholly more classic sound. The tracks mentioned thus far are slower than the bulk of the album (though just barely), but by taking their foot from the floor Cut Up end up crafting some pretty damn good songs, rather than tiring, generic blast-fests. Album closer, the poorly titled “Raped by the Blade” features a really sinister, unsettling minute-long intro that is actually the best bit of the track. Sadly, when the intro ends, “Raped by the Blade” reverts mainly to speed and brutality, sacrificing the incredible atmosphere the intro created.Though the far superior of the group’s two offerings and a step in the right direction,”Wherever They May Rot” still feels like a tribute to Vomitory, and weak compared to what we know these musicians are capable of. Sure, it ticks all the boxes – the production is meaty, the vocals are strong, the rhythms tight and the guitar-work are impressive. And while I am a strong believer that an album doesn’t need to be groundbreaking to be excellent, this feels like death metal by numbers. Cut Up are on the right path, and “Wherever They May Rot” has more than it’s fair share of strong, bludgeoning moments, but a bit more creativity would go a long, long way in proving the band is more than a poor man’s Vomitory.
