Bio:

Asphyx is a Dutch death metal band that was formed in Overijssel, Netherlands in 1987.The band was formed in 1987 by Bob Bagchus and Tonny Brookhuis. Eric Daniels was found as a second guitarist and Chuck Colli joined on vocals and bass guitar; this line up released the Enter the Domain demo.In March 1989, Colli was replaced by Theo Loomans and the band recorded the Crush the Cenotaph demo. Brookhuis then left the band and the remaining three recorded Embrace the Death, an album which was never released because of label problems. After leaving Pestilence in the early 1990s, Martin van Drunen joined Asphyx and the band signed to Century Media Records. After the release of their first album, The Rack, they went on a European tour with Entombed, followed by a tour with Bolt Thrower and Benediction in 1992. Shortly after the recording of the second album, Last One on Earth, van Drunen left the band, to be replaced by Ron van der Pol. Eventually Bagchus left the band as well and was replaced by Sander van Hoof.In 1994, the band released its third, self-titled album, but broke up shortly afterward. In 1995, Loomans and Bagchus reformed Asphyx and recorded God Cries. Around the same time, the Embrace the Death album, recorded in 1990, was released. Nevertheless, the band split up again after the release. In 1998, Loomans died when a train hit his car. The circumstances suggest it was an act of suicide. Some time later, Soulburn was founded by Bagchus and Daniels and, together with Pentacle singer and bass guitarist Wannes Gubbels, they recorded Feeding on Angels. In 1999, they renamed the project Asphyx and recorded the On the Wings of Inferno album with the same line up. However, Asphyx disbanded again in 2000.In January 2007, the band re-united with van Drunen, Gubbels, Paul Baayens and Bagchus. They did not intend to record a new album, but focused only on live performances. However, in January 2008, they recorded a cover of a Celtic Frost song and a new song called "Death... The Brutal Way". In July 2008, they announced that new material was being prepared. Death...The Brutal Way was released in June 2009 by Century Media. It was released in North America by Ibex Moon Records on August 18, 2009, quickly becoming the distributor's best seller. On November 30, 2011, Asphyx finished recording on their eighth studio album entitled Deathhammer which was set to be released on February 27th, 2012 in Europe and February 28th, 2012 in North America via Century Media Records. In March 2014, founding member Bob Bagchus has parted ways from the band and replaced by Stefan Hüskes as a new drummer. On October 14, 2015, Asphyx made an announcement they are working on a new album at the end of November for the long-awaited Deathhammer follow up and begin their first tour at Latin America.

Album:

Perhaps it is unfair, but the first thing that called to my mind when listening to "Incoming Death" for the first time was that the riff of "Division Brandenburg" lies in close proximity to that of Marduk's unsparing war elegy "Wartheland". Or is it just the very similar atmosphere of these two songs or the fact that the lyrics of both tracks deal with the most difficult chapter of the German history that makes me think of Marduk's fourth track of "Frontschwein"? However, two things can be taken for granted. Firstly, "Division Brandenburg" has everything that a fantastic piece needs in view of its stomping drums and the typical abysmal riffs of Asphyx that were established by songs such as "Scorbutics". Secondly, the Dutch army with the competent German mercenary Stefan Hüskens on drums does not need to adopt other people's songs. Already the rather unusual mix of (more or less) pure doom monsters and rapid death eruptions indicates the individuality of Asphyx (in sharp contrast to the genre typical and pretty banal artwork). Not to mention the fact that the ambassadors of apocalyptic fierceness have proven their song-writing skills on the predecessors of the here presented work. The band has not written the new climax of its discography, but there is no reason for concern as well. Frontman van Drunen and his henchmen have not misplaced their proven recipe. On the one hand, merciless neckbreakers like the opener and the title track connect primitiveness with violence and the effect is still amazing. On the other hand, viscous doom songs such as "Subterra Incognita" mirror the band's affinity for slow acting poisons and hold the heavyweight versions of Leif Edling riffs. Listen closely to the sinister "Wardroid"; the sequence that sets in at 2:08 invites the audience to celebrate a candlemass. The closer has to be mentioned in this context, because it stands in the tradition of "As the Magma Mammoth Rises". This means that "Death: the Only Immortal" combines grandeur with sluggish heaviness and the result is a monumental event. But due to my weakness for fast rhythms, I am of the opinion that especially each and every speedster works in a mind-blowing manner. Since the creation of extreme metal, brutality and velocity have always been a good team. Not to mention the efficient guitar work. The partially minimalist riffs appear as pinpoint stitches, while the full sound comes as a tank which leaves a trail of devastation. No doubt, the massive production sets the right frame for Asphyx' orgy of aggression. The sound of "Incoming Death" is not better nor worse than that of its two predecessors and this can be understood as a great compliment. The small problem - and I would like to emphasize the word "small" (actually I wanted to capitalize this word, but there is nothing more incoherent than to write "small" in uppercase letters: "SMALL"... this looks so moronic, it pisses me off) - that I have with the album is based on the doom tracks. Some relatively tedious parts have crept in. While the fast pieces are the blazing flames of a conflagration - "Wildland Fire" delivers the fitting lyrics in this context -, "The Grand Denial" is only a smoldering fire. However, Asphyx have not forged lame fillers just to make the record complete. The vast majority of the riffs leaves a massive impact and the general aura of the album is the exact opposite of a plea for clemency. Guess it goes without saying that van Drunen plays his part in this respect. His voice sounds as inhuman as ever. From my point of view, he does not belong to the most charismatic singers, but he works authentically instead of intending to win a death metal beauty contest. However, the quintessence is that the deathhammer is still active. Asphyx do not enter new dimensions, but "Incoming Death" confirms the high compositional standard of the formation. Although the bonus section is pretty useless, the group retains its credibility and the regular tracks offer a high dose of metallic robustness. Highlights? With the exception of the rather pale "Forerunners of the Apocalypse", I recommend all tracks of the regular edition that do not surpass the four minutes mark.

Album:

As far everything that has been going on, humanity received a supposed signal to what is going to come next, sometime, somewhere in the future. There have been enough artists, through various of measures, that shows that our fate isn't going to be bright, but rather dark and challenging. Some even state that there would be no comeback from such events of high magnitude. The veteran match makers between Death and Doom Metal, the Dutch ASPHYX, aren't the first, no will be the last, to try to keep our minds in check, tell us what we did wrong and through brutality, show us where we need to go in order to not step on yet another landmine on our way towards the pit. As result of the inability to play live, came forth the hard work that ended up in their new album, "Necroceros", via Century Media Records, another shared token of their meaning of Death. For me personally, ever since the Dutch comeback near the end of the first decade of 00s, is their 2012's "Deathhammer", clearly a trailblazer of all counts. The band has been taking its time between releases, and got themselves another scorcher in the image of "Incoming Death". Nonetheless, I felt that it was only a matter of time until a stronger impact would raise the standard bar a notch higher and I do believe that "Necroceros" idyllically serves that purpose.Whether the solid lineup, and its chemistry, that led to this great burst of massive riffery, various music orientations lying between the putrid marriage of Death and Doom Metal, and the constant drive, even in mournful slow tempos, ASPHYX brought themselves the gold. Even as a veteran band as they are, there is that feeling of something to prove, to become tighter, heavier, I would also argue on melodic in a special kind of way.It is true that no matter what, and is showed on their previous albums, there is that head on attitude, that is a grand stand shower of meaty riffs, thanks to Paul Baayens, alongside the hoarse, soaring growls of Martin van Drunen. Leading the charge on that front is the chunky grinder "Botox Implosion", which offer a wonderful opportunity to bang one's head mercilessly. Other definitive that maintain the form of attack is "The Sole Cure is Death" and its deeper successor, "Molten Black Earth".On the other hand, there is yet another approach, a Doomier kind, that presented itself as somewhat uncanny, distinct as showcased on sorrowful "Three Years of Famine". This song shares an atmosphere of grey, enchanted by mournful melodies, displaying a side of the band that might remind of their earlier days prior to the hiatus. "In Blazing Oceans" picks up the tempo and escalates, inspiring elements of Melodic Death Metal to the band's mix of gruesome sound, making it appealing right from the get go.Generally, ASPHYX maintained their class, as they have been previously, nevertheless, "Necroceros", both through its songwriting and sound, felt to me like a step up the ladder, and a bright future, at least in the music, for the Dutch band.
