Bio:

Incantation is an American death metal band that was formed by John McEntee and Paul Ledney in 1989. They are one of the leaders in the New York death metal scene along with fellow bands Suffocation and Immolation, even though the band is currently located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.Incantation is notable for mixing widely varied tempos into their music, often playing slow, down-tuned passages similar to those performed by death/doom bands like Autopsy. To date the band has released eight full-length records, two live records, four EPs, two singles, three splits, one DVD, and three demos. The band has seen many lineup changes in their 22-year history and guitarist John McEntee is the sole original member. Incantation first came to prominence with Onward to Golgotha and Mortal Throne of Nazarene, which features Craig Pillard on vocals. Following the release of the Forsaken Mourning of Angelic Anguish EP in 1997, Pillard departed Incantation and was replaced by Daniel Corchado of The Chasm. Corchado performed on one album, 1998's Diabolical Conquest, before departing. Vocalist Mike Saez performed on the next two albums, The Infernal Storm (2000) and Blasphemy (2002). Beginning with Decimate Christendom, guitarist and frontman John McEntee took on vocal responsibilities, a role that he continues to the present.

Album:

Onward to Golgotha is the debut studio album by the American death metal band Incantation. The album was released in 1992 on Relapse Records. It was re-released in October 2006 with a bonus DVD of live performances. In the January edition of the American heavy metal magazine Decibel (magazine) they added it as their 72nd hall of fame album. To celebrate being added to the hall of fame it will be re-released on 180 gram vinyl, but limited to only 1,000 copies.Where does one start a review with a band such as Incantation? Sure they may not have achieved the same levels of success as Morbid Angel for example, but as far as influential, underrated extreme metal acts go, Incantation is right up at the pointy end of the field, if not at the very top. Relapse Records, the label responsible for unleashing their 1992 debut album, the relentless Onward To Golgotha, unto the metal masses back in the day, have seen fit to give this seminal release an aural overhaul and a bonus DVD of live tracks from back in the day circa this release. From the frantic blasts that quickly usher in Golgotha, it's instantly obvious that Incantation never sounded better. The mix (by then unknown engineer Steve Evetts) of guttural guitars and brutal blasts along with Craig Pillard's bowel-emptying vocals is louder than before but not at the expense of the album's aural integrity. The sheer brutality of what many consider to be Incantation's finest release still to this day, is maintained throughout the likes of the crushing Devoured Death, the excellent Blasphemous Creature, the dark and occasionally keyboard infested Christening The Afterbirth, the savage Profanation and unforgiving Eternal Torture. As Relapse has done with other reissues, they've included a bonus DVD with Onward To Golgotha. The DVD features three live sets all from 1992 and around the timing of the original release of Onward To Golgotha. The band's classic line-up of that era is in tact with Pillard on vocals and guitars, John McEntree (the band's sole remaining original member to date) also on guitars, and bassist Ronnie Deo and drummer Jim Roe rounding it out. The quality of the live footage is basically bootleg VHS standard so don't be expecting 5.1 digital surround sound, multiple camera angles and all that jazz from modern day live DVDs. It's rough and raw and for some fans, the only way that this line-up can be witnessed. Enjoy it for what it is - the perfect companion disc to this classic death metal album. Long time Incantation fans can rejoice in the quality of and additions to this reissue of Onward To Golgotha, and if you're one who hasn't gotten into this band, then this is clearly your starting point without question. Put simply, you cannot call yourself an extreme metal fan if you do not have this in your collection.
